Black Women Are Kicking Butt, Taking Names, and Getting Hired

Bloomberg Business Week is reporting some good news for women on the job front. From December 2011 to April 2012, black women have experienced the largest gain in jobs of any single demographic group according to Bureau of Labor Statistics data. The unemployment rate for black female went from 13.9 percent to 10.8 percent.

The Education, health care, and retail sectors of the economy posted the largest gains in new hires; considering that these sectors tend to be dominated by woman, it’s not surprising the spoils of the flurry of new hiring went to women.

While the overall number of people not in the labor force has been increasing and the labor force participation rate have been decreasing, the employment gains for black women are not a statistical irregularity: black women participation the workforce has actually been increasing since December.

Some of this increased labor force participation may be due to gaining more part-time work, but there is no reason why those part-time jobs cannot be a doorway to full-time employment with the same company later on down the line, or with another company.

Black women are working it. Literally.
