Are Black Women and Asian Men Finally Getting Together?

Turns out interracial unions between black women and Asian men aren’t a recent development. Take a look at these vintage photos and see for yourself.

No. Because Asian men and black women have always gotten together and this is nothing novel. Though not as numerous as bw-wm couples, depending upon where they were geographically Asian men did marry numerous black women. While researching, I found Providence’s Black Chinese: A Love Story, a report by Luke Tsai. There were probably more couples as documents suggest a Chinese presence in Rhode Island as early as 1801.

Euphoria Luv has always focused on black and Asian relationships, couples and families. Onica Cupido, the founder considers it a “Black and Asian Community Blog.” Her blog was one of the few that those interested could turn to for resources, stories, articles and pictures of black and Asian pairings. Renee Tecco has long run Sardonic Sistah Says. Renee is a black woman married to a Korean man living in the Midwest, but her blog tackles current events, history, profiles Asian and black singers and bands. She provides a well rounded blog where you can find a little of everything. Life Behind The Wall belongs to Jo Gan, an expat living in China married to a Chinese man. Jo provides a different perspective on Asian male black woman marriage because of her unique circumstances actually living abroad. We all look forward to Jo’s updates sure to provide us with thought provoking content and usually a few chuckles. Jo’s latest interview is great!

Today we can find bw-am groups and blogs springing up all over the place. On Facebook alone there are several such as Blasian Magazine run by B. Love; Blasian Couples run by Peter Kwok; and 30+Asian & Black Love run by MeeMee Kim Johnson and author Alouette Grant. A quick Internet search will reveal other online groups dedicated to black and Asian unions.

Top photo is of Eugene and Agatha Chen of Trinidad who were both born in 1878 married in 1899. BW-AM unions are very common in the Caribbean Islands.

I'm currently in a relationship with a man who is japanese ,hungarian, and black. His features, when he has facial hair, resembles his hungarian ancestry and we tend to receive stares depending on where we are. (We live in california) HOWEVER, when we are in San Fran, especially Chinatown or Japantown, or anywhere near an Asian culture, we get followed and stared at religiously. People whisper around us. As a black woman, its easier for me to notice the stares, because I have had them my whole life, he is quick to ignore them. Its more Asian men that stare and look at him like he did something wrong, whereas Asian and White women, depending on the situation, openly attempt to flirt with him when we are out in public as if I'm the "friend"I think it just depends on the history of the family whether an asian man will date a black woman. In my case, his grandmother was born in Okinawa and married their grandfather, a black man from Louisiana. Sorry so long, just wanted to touch on a few subjects.

This is really nice, I personally love Asian men...But even though black women and asian men is becoming more popular, I would say it's still a rare situation these relationships get more "hate" than even black women/white man relationships.

I'd mentioned in another post somewhere that Asian men (for me in, say, the last 15 years or so) are getting hotter.  The one Asian acquaintance that I knew of growing up hung with some truly hated (by me) Black boys in my neighborhood so I never cared to get to know him (other than having seen Asian men in Bruce Lee movies). An attractive Asian man would have to be bigger than me and that's something I've rarely seen among the Asian males that I know, they are cute but smaller in height and build than I.  However, I've developed attraction to Asian men because of Tim Kang (The Mentalist) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tim_Kang,

Daniel Dae Kim (Hawii 5.0) http://danieldaekim.com, and Russell Wong (Romeo Must Die).   These men are HAAAAAWWT.    I gotta mixed heritage White fella already (whose been through my best and worst moments with me) but should he start actin' up, I might have to grab me a man of Asian descent in short order, bwaaaaaaaaaahhhhaaaaa.

DeepWater This made me laugh!!!  I know the cutest, smartest, athletic Asian guy through work and if I was his age and a shortie I'd snatch him UP!  I'd love to find him a nice girl since I'm approaching cougarliciousness and taken.  Women in their 20s always sleep on guys like this.  When will we learn? LOL

Statuesque   "Cougarliciousness", bwaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhaaaaaaaa, omg.   I gotta remember that one, Statuesque.   Never thought of "Cougarlicious" let alone "Cougarlisciousness", bwaaaaaaaaaahhhhaaaaaaaaa.

Guuurrrrl, went to store and somebody's White child, maybe twenty or twenty-something, straight smiled at me and said "How are you today?" not too long ago with that little twinkle in his eye.  I thought, well, maybe I'm trippin' and he's talkin' to some girl behind me or something.  No such luck, was makin' my purchase, and no else was around me but him, then I thought, well, maybe he's talkin' to a store clerk over my shoulder whom I can't see or somethin', nope, it was me.  "I'm doin' well today, thank you" (hard side-eye), he then says to me, no lie gurl, "I don't bite unless you want me to" with a little sly smile on his face, "no thanks, um, you have good day now, bye-bye", bwaaaaaahhhaaaaa.    I still see him around, he says "hi", but, I think, if I'm not trippin' too hard, he wants more or I could be reading it wrong and he's just a cute kid so I feel you, Statuesque, on the "cougarlisciousness" tip.

DeepWater ROTFLMAO!!!!  Yeah DeepWater that child liked what he saw and wasn't going let a silly thing like not being of legal drinking age stop him from letting you know what's up!!

Statuesque   Bwwwaaahhhaaa.  It's hard to tell young people today.  I be seein' folk while me and boyfriend be drivin' around for whatever we tease, lookin' at other drivers, "what are you, twelve?", bwaaaahhhaaaa.

There's an Asian child, err, um, young man, that's been checkin' for me too lately when I go to a bigger box store, and even near 50 mark, these little boys be tryin' to holla at me, bwaaaaahhhhaaa    I do stay in shape for myself and my man, but dayum, they be young, gurl, YOUNG, like, I'm guessin' 18, 19, 20, early twenties, I mean, dayum, don't want girls your own age?

I think the reason why people feel like black women and asian men don't get together is because it's not a particularly easy connection to make. Especially when cultural norms and expectation and stereotypes come into play.

That said, the links and info provided is great.

As someone of Jamaican heritage, Black women/Chinese men Jamaican couples are not uncommon. My Aunt is married to a Chinese Jamaican(another Aunt was married to an Indian Jamaican, and another one married to a German).  I've seen that coupling here in Soutern Maryland as well.  Love knows no color.
