Regardless of whether or not you agree with Will and Jada’s liberal parenting skills you can’t deny that Willow Smith is one awesome young Black woman. Freedom and protection during childhood can help to cultivate creativity, individuality and a strong sense of self. These things are what makes Willow unique and has also landed her the cover of the upcoming Aug issue of Teen Vogue.

In Teen Vogue‘s August issue, the singer/actress opens up about her career, fashion sense, and outlook on life. It’s been a while since we’ve seen Willow on the big screen, and while her older brother Jaden Smith has continued to pursue his acting career, Willow chose to drop the screenplays and go back to middle school, opting out of the starring role in the highly anticipated remake of Annie with Jamie Foxx

Between music, art, fashion, acting and being the child of high profile celebrities, it seems like there isn’t anything that young Willow won’t be able to do. When all the criticism is said and done, would you prefer to have a well rounded, thinking and aware daughter or one that is insecure and willing to do whatever is necessary in order to matter to folks that could care less? I’ll take the prior, and I will keep my eye on this dynamic Black woman in the making, will you?

It is rare that two colors so opposite go so well with each other. Unlike any combination in the color spectrum, black and white –no pun intended– are two very compatible colors, they were indeed made for each other.

If you love this chic combination that became world famous during the Roaring Twenties, then you will not be disappointed with this SS2014 season, because the  combo has been seen dancing on every catwalk, from New York to Paris, and London to Milan. It would seem that all of the fashion industry is truly enamored with their glamour.

Even the glittering stars gaze in awe of this couple. In fact their envious gaze causes them to want to embody the odd pair. So they do. They deck themselves [the starlets] in black and white from head to toe and dare anyone to say anything about it. They have discovered the fashion truth, ‘that everyone looks stunning in black and white.’

Even the designers were impressed by this complimentary duo. Stating that ‘opposites not only attract, they set off fireworks!’  From Dolce and Gabbana to Valentino and Zimmerman to Carolina Herrera, luxury designers decked their models in black and white attire and sent them down the runway receiving many accolades.

Needless to say, no matter your size or complexion, this rocking combo is definitely for you. From airy frocks, to structured suits, no one can go wrong in this combo. And if what they say about opposites attracting, then you definitely may stop traffic, receive many compliments, and perhaps be perused in the grocery store. And perhaps, just maybe, in this not so subtle ensemble, you will attract that rainbeau you have been looking for.

Until then, here are some key pieces to choose from, to add black and white into your wardrobe.

As a former makeup artist extraordinaire, I always obsess over the new beauty trends each season, but to be honest, once I stop being an artist, I kinda stop wearing makeup.  Years of having to put on a coat of makeup before leaving the house to go to work has left me burnt out. Well, that is until this season.

This season is the season of fun, futuristic, 60s throwback makeup fun and it has gotten me excited again. In fact, I will begin wearing makeup to work because of it. One of my favorite trends is White Hot, Minimalism. This trend is fantastic for all women no matter the shade and it goes well with nude, pastel, and bright classic red lips.

white-eyeshadow

White Hot is the trend of using white eye shadow either all over the lid with a black liner, all over the lid with large lashes (60s), or all over the eye from lash line to brow and as eye liner.

If you are not one to be overly creative with your eye make up, try the classic white eye shadow (brown/nude crease) and black liner, ala Marilyn Monroe. To accomplish this use a matte or semi-matter white eye shadow like M.A.C.’s Gesso eye shadow. Make sure to plump up your lashes by adding false ones or using a volumizing mascara.

You can also try it as an accent color near the tea duct to make your eyes look brighter and wider. to accomplish, use a more shimmery white shadow or liner instead of a matte one.

Either way you decide to wear this trend, I am sure you will be stopped often for compliments AND it gives you an opportunity to try something completely new, especially if you are a person slightly terrified of makeup. Here is a list of some awesome white shadows and liners you can try the next time you are in the mall. And another bonus is this video by makeup mavens, and sisters, Pixiwoo. Enjoy the accent and watch as many of the vids and you can possibly muster, I promise you’ll be a pro by the time it’s all said and done.

I find it quite interesting that each season has a staple color every single season. For example, Winter’s staple color is black. Fall’s staple color is burgundy or oxblood.  Spring staple.. well spring doesn’t have a staple because it shares it’s staple color with summer, which is white. This season isn’t any different except, normally white is coupled with another color like gold or silver but this season, try to avoid colored beverages and spicy foods, because white now has it’s own zip code.   102513-SS2014-trends-29-400   This season’s ultimate color trend is Bright White.  This trend takes white and throw it all on the canvas. Everything white. Head-to-toe white.   spring-2014-color-trend-white   But if you are one of those persons who for some unknown bizarre reason, always always spills something on your clothes when you wear white, have no fear, this trend is versatile. You can mix white with many different colors and still find yourself staying true to this trend. Try mixing white with yellow or red, or carry a big Chlorox stick around with you.   cast-olivia-pope-Recap-ABC-Scandal-Star-Kerry-Washington-Style-Premier-season-1-Season-2-2012-Fashion-Wearing-Dress-dating-boyfriend-husband-white-cushnie-et-ochs   The awesome thing about this classic trend is that all white looks great on all skin tones, all ages, and all hair colors. You just can’t go wrong with it.  It’s always fresh, fun, and at most times elegant. It is the lighter brighter sister of black.   spring-2014-color-trends-04   It is even good to wear a white suit for business and still look formidable. Don’t believe me? Ask Olivia Pope. She shows us how to wear white from H2T every week. Let us pause, to appreciate the wardrobe, i.e. white trench that Olivia is seen in every week.   Olivia-Pope-white-hat-image1-378x414                 f1f8a8e5124df1721daccc34faa37b83   Olivia-Pope-tory-burch-trench-coat   So if you are on board for this trend, I would suggest you start off small. Pic one piece to be the focal white piece in your ensemble, you know, just in case you are a dirt magnet in white. Once you are comfortable and confident that you will implode, add another white piece to the ensemble, until you are in white from top to bottom. Below, are some awesome white ideas. Enjoy!

Summer is fast approaching and the days have been heating up (unless of course you are on the south side of the planet below the equator). Being that it is late spring, the trends always lend themselves to reflect what is going on nature. For example, every year there are a plethora bright colored and floral trends running a muck and trying to outdo each other. Usually one of the trends wins the battle, but this season has seemingly expanded the (flower blooming) field to encompass them all, not to mention allowing them to pollinate with each other, with exquisite panache.

Emporio Armani SS14 Milan_catwalk_print_trends_pattern

One of my favorite trends, among many, is the Pacifica aka Tropical trend. This trends brings a celebration or homage to tropical plants by splashing them in a continuous pattern on shoes, handbags, pants, dresses and tops in bright and sometimes subdued hues that mimic these blooms in the wild.

Etro Spring Summer 2014_Catwalk_trends_Prints_Milan

From designers Roberto Cavalli, Etro, Versace, and Armani, it would seem that the tropical trend was the forerunner on the catwalks of Milan this season.

Just_Cavalli_SS14_Milan_Print_trends_runway

Now I know what some of you are thinking, I do not wish to look like a has-been tourist running around in tacky Tommy Bahamas gear. Well hold your dark shade wearing fanny pouch carrying horses, this trend is much more elegant than that. Think Bali, Hawaii, and the many islands dotting the Pacific Ocean. You can mix match many other patterns with this trend including paisley, polk-a-dots, and animal prints to name a few. So tap into your tropical goddess and embrace the Pacifica trend this spring. I promise once you do, you feel fresh and carefree all spring and summer long and you will definitely feel like you are on a tropical beach sipping Mai Tai’s and eating exotic cuisine, at least in your mind you will. Take a look at some of the pieces I put together for this trend below.

Last night all the stars were out in the glimmering glory, dazzling us anew as they strut the red gas stream known as the Red Carpet. Some were dressed to impressed and some, not so much, and a few, whom I will not mention, looked skeletal and wasted away–I worry. However, I am one who likes to focus on positive things and energy, so we will celebrate the gorgeous frocks that were worn by many of the starlets last night, giving us a glimpse into some of the trends that will be available to us this Fall 2014/15 season.

This year’s event was dedicated to Charles James, America’s First Couturier, and the participants were supposed to embellish themselves. So let’s see how they did, shall we?

Lupita Nyong'o in Prada

First things first, all shout outs must go out to the fashion darling, who channeled Josephine Baker all the way down to her toe nails last night, Lupita Nyong’o. She embellished her little Prada flapper dress to within an inch of it’s life, which was a major risk, and I loved every second of it.  Love it or hate, you must admit Lupita didn’t hold any punches by being decked in green and sparkling faux emerald jewels and feathers. Lupita in thisamazing frock,  showed us how to channel our inner flapper. Which leads us to the first trend–Art Deco Redux.

Art Deco Redux

Art Deco Redux is the reintroduction, reinspired trend that gets its gutsiness from the The Great Gatsby era of flappers, nouveau riche, and artisans. This trend is over the top, at time gaudy, but extremely artistic in nature, yet extremely glam in a riotous way. Here are few starlets who wore this trend well.

chanel iman topshop

Chanel Iman in Topshop

solange phillip lim

Solange Knowles in Phillip Lim

Gabrielle Union in Prada

Hollywood Glam–1940s

From it’s flowing curve hugging gowns, to the high shine of sparkling diamonds and finger waved coiffed hair, this trend is definitely for the glam squad of women are truly enjoying celebrating their feminine curves, like the screen goddesses of old. Check out these starlets that embodied this trend to the ‘gilt’ last night.

charlize dior

Charlize Theron in Dior

jordan dunn tpshop

Jordan Dunn in Topshop

Blake Lively in Gucci

Bohemian Glamazon

Bohemian Glamazon is what I dubbed the trend that is layered with sometimes free flowing  fringed frocks, whispy dresses that are embellished in a tribalistic way with stones, flowers, feathers or what have you or midriff baring outfits. It’s the sort of trend that is mimicked by Valentino’s SS 2014 Collection that reflects that nomadic cultures of old and these leading ladies truly work their magic in this trend.

Sarah Paulson in Prada

rihanna stella m

Rihanna in Stella McCartney

michelle monaghan altuszarra

Here’s to all the women who made us drool last night and that inspired our fall wardrobes.
