‘Round these parts we LOVE being girls, don’t we, ladies? Here’s some news you can use…

Ooo La La!! Halle Berry has collaborated with French lingerie brand Scandale Paris to launch it in select Target stores and online on October 27. The lingerie label was initially established in 1932, and this collection is designed to celebrate the many roles that women play. Check out the video below. Halle promises that the material isn’t cheap feeling, so now I’m intrigued. Because as soon as I heard “Target” I turned up my nose. I’m a bit of a lingerie snob.

Great news for you MAC Cosmetics lovers out there! They’re collaborating with womenswear label Nasty Gal. The four-piece collection is intensely pigmented and features three matte Lipsticks in Stunner clean red, Runner burgundy and GUNNER deep purple, priced at $16 each; and the Studio Nail Lacquer, available in the shade Flaming Rose true red (crème) at $12. Fall is in full swing and the cooler temperatures make it necessary to bundle up a bit more and gives us ladies a reason to wear stylish and sexy boots. Boots are an excellent way to pull your outfit together and add a little umph to your stride. These picks are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the varieties of colors, materials and styles that are available in fall footwear. Check them out and let me know what kind of boots you’ll be rocking this fall!

1. Chocolate colored microsuede make these boots from Inc. International Concepts absolutely gorgeous and the texture is just the icing on the cake. With foam padding for ultimate comfort and a 3 1/2 inch heel, these boots would look perfect with a fitted pair of jeans or a casual skirt or dress.

2. If you could bottle up sexy into a boot, these would be the ones! The Cove Over The Knee Boots by Fergie are sleek and alluring. Midnight black with a gold hardware accent makes this boot an excellent choice for a night on the town or over your favorite jeans to take a plain outfit and transform it into something more special.

3. Nine West PickMe Booties are made with black leather and the oversized belt buckle adds charm to an already adorable boot.  A 3 1/4 inch wrapped heel gives you the height you’re looking for in a heel and the design seals the deal. I think these boots are just super-cute!

4. Just because a boot doesn’t have a heel doesn’t mean that it isn’t sexy. Enter: Guess Women’s Hurtle Tall Shaft Riding Boots. These riding boots are a delicious medium brown, with stylishly placed buckles and a plaid insert for a dash of unexpected design.

Are you looking forward to buying new fall boots? I know that I really like the riding boots and might give those a shot.

I’m sorry, White folks land wants to claim each and every awesome thing about Blackness and turn it into a consumable item attributed to THEIR brilliance. But when it comes to amazing hairstyles Black girls just cannot be denied. If you had eyeballs during the late 70’s- 80’s and was anywhere near an urban neighborhood than I”m sure you feasted your eyes upon BEAUTIFUL BROWN GIRLS ROCKING BEADS ON BRAIDS.

I was so jealous as a little girl! I would see the neighborhood girls freshly “did” hair shining from Dax or Sulfer 8 pomade with rows and rows of intricately twined braids and feel a pang of envy.4E277F54-DBA8-43E9-84B1-2D19462C3F6C

I wasn’t so much interested in the braids (because I knew corn rows hurt and I hated sitting still to have my hair done anyway) but I would have given my most prized possession (a book, surely) to have had the chance to have my hair braided and beaded like the little girls I would see playing outside.

dfe9b0c159007504cc2ec59f8bc3e834

I, too, wanted to know the glory of turning my head and having the occasion punctuated by the ‘ching-ching-ching’ noise of beads knocking against one another.

I, too, wanted to have hair that separated and swung with translucent colors with tiny bits of tin foil on the edge of each teeny weeny braid.

DSCF4314-vi

Alas, Arlene was not about that life. She could only do loose twisted braids and that was fine for my abundance of hair. She spent no more than 10 minutes on my head each morning before sending me off to school.

66a003b86247cb07b43665b285a49075

Though my neighbors wore such hairstyles, my request to ask if they could do my hair in a braid with beads stylewas met with a resounding, ‘No’, because other people ‘playing’ in your hair will make your hair ‘go-bad’ or some other such old negro wives tale. I wasn’t satisfied but was powerless when it came to obtaining a head full of history and culture.

bcebd9b7599687261d059d3c51c219e2

The style became popular on adults during the 80’s, and let’s not pretend that we could ignore Bo Derek and White America’s insistence that THEY created and popularized the braid with beads look, but I was over the trend by the time I could pay and commit my own time and money into braids and beads.

Alicia Keys, braids, beads, hairstyles, history, TBT, throw back Thursday, culture, Egypt, Africa,

Childhood was many moons ago but I can’t help to reminisce of the style’s that my parents just flat out refused to participate in. I may not have had the chance to pick out my packs of color coordinated beads and dedicate several hours to sitting still but I can appreciate the beauty of this hairstyle taken directly from our African sisters across the continent.

43ed47a84f931df7de0b4b4ee33887dd

When you braid your child’s hair, you are participating in a social activity that spans back to the earliest days of society. When you braid hair, or get your own hair braided, you are showing love and passing on a little bit of our shared history.

Fun facts:

Embellishments worn in the hair originated in Egypt; hairstyles often displayed a person’s class, marriage status, age and wealth. The more intricate the hair, the higher up the social ladder you live, think who has time to sit and do all dat dam braiding besides a person of means? Makes sense, right?

Braids are thought to have originated in East Africa, the oldest evidence of braids are a stone carving featuring a woman with braided hair found near the Nile river.

Certain tribes believe that loose hair should only be worn during mourning and that un-braided hair is seen to be in poor taste. Could this be where AA got the belief that all hair should be ‘done’ and not simply clean and growing from one’s scalp? Could be.

Braiding is a social activity that bonds older women to young children as elder braids hair using techniques that took time to master and styles that have been passed down from generation to generation.

Many of the braid patterns used in braid styles have roots (!) spanning back across the continent to specific tribes.

Braiding is considered an act of fashion, history, and as a gesture of care given from one person to another.

As if we needed another reason to adore the drop-dead-gorgeous Kerry Washington, “Gladiators,” everywhere are beyond elated about the Scandal Collection being released by The Limited next week! September in New York is an exciting time! New York Fashion Week gathers designers from around the globe to display their collections for the Spring/Summer of the coming year. Fashion lovers unite to celebrate the new trends and be in the city where fashion is a language unto itself. Check out a few of the Spring/Summer 2015 collections that I absolutely loved!

BetseyJohnsonCollage

Betsey Johnson’s Spring/Summer 2015 collection was named “Prenup.” Models skipped down the runway in a nonchalant, happy-go-lucky manner with blinged-out necklaces with the words “prenup,”spelled out on them. The marriage theme was paired with dramatically dark eyes, bold lips and messy, curly manes. Her eclectic style varied from gorgeous floor length gowns to boho chic dresses, strategically placed feathers, and toule….. there was lots of toule! One thing I love about Betsey Johnson is that her collections are always so varied in style that you can’t possibly contain them. She also used this show to support marriage equality and after doing a cartwheel she was scooped into the arms of a drag queen wearing a wedding dress, then carried off stage! Wow!

MichaelKors

Michael Kors’ Spring/Summer 2015 line embodied classic and timeless looks that flowed effortlessly. Bright white mixed with touches of floral was the overall theme. What I love about this collection is that Kors creates very wearable designs that are comfortable and chic. He embraces dresses, skirts and pants with such a flattering fit that is always elegant and strong.

TrinaTurkCollage1

I am a huge Trina Turk fan and her Spring/Summer 2015 collection did not disappoint. Bright and effervescent oranges paired with teal and lime green were a dream come true. Patterns, patterns and patterns, oh my! Let’s just say Ms. Turk isn’t afraid to mix it up! Whether it be stripes, floral or a psychedelic square print, this collection delivers in a bold and colorful way!

Did you get to check out any of the shows for NYFW online or in-person? Do tell! Do you have a favorite?

Although the temperatures are bit on the high side and it seems a bit premature to pull out our jackets and scarves, the calendar lets us know that the time is drawing near. I love fall because of the brilliant and beautiful colors that the leaves change during this time. I also love pumpkin scented candles but that’s for another post. I hope you ladies try some new things and aim to look your best no matter what the season is. Here are a few cute items that will help you pull together some super-cute fall looks.

Essie 2014 Fall Collection Nail Polish: Will you be bold enough to try “Dress To Kilt,” (vibrant cranberry) or  “Style Cartel,” (navy blue)? The light gray color “Take It Outside,” and brown “Partner In Crime,” are more subtle colors but are still very sleek and chic for fall!

Ladies Joggers: When I laid my eyes on these, I immediately fell in love. You mean to tell me they’ve found a way that you can wear jogging pants in public, and fashionably at that? I’d say get some joggers in an interesting color or print and pair with a plain top and some really cute sandals (if it’s warm enough) or cute boots when it gets a little chillier. The joggers pictured above were found at ASOS, you can also find them at H&M or even Old Navy. Many brands carry ladies joggers. Oh and oooo! Check out this acid washed joggers by SOHO Girl!

130763_1_eiufhieufhfe.png

Statement Necklaces: I don’t know too many accessories that immediately dress up an outfit and you can find really cute ones at a variety of price points. A great place to look for an original piece is Etsy, also retailers like Nordstrom and websites like Baublebar carry beautiful statement necklaces that are major eye candy. Imagine how this electric blue bib necklace and matching earrings by nicerocker will look against brown skin? “The men all pause…”

61gSkB2afRL._SY355_

Pleated Skirts: Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens. Is it just me or do long skirts make you think of being prim and proper, like Mary Poppins? Nope. Well maybe it’s just me. These skirts are undeniably feminine and dainty. When they are paired with a fitted top, it creates a wonderful silhouette. Great places to look for pleated skirts are Zara, Madewell and H&M.

Denim + Floral Combo: Of all the trends, this my favorite. Pairing a denim shirt with a floral skirt or even floral pant is simple and fashionable. The addition of a bright colored scarf makes this outfit complete. Macy’s and Nordstrom have a gorgeous variety of floral skirts and Old Navy carries a variety of denim and chambray shirts.

Are you looking forward to the change of seasons and trying out new trends for fall?
