It’s only natural to to want to look gorgeous on Valentine’s day for your partner and even your potential partner. We want to look best from our hair to makeup to clothing and accessories. Here are some helpful valentine’s day makeup tips to help you look sexy this Valentine’s Day!

Kissably Soft Lips

To make your lips kissably soft exfoliate them! I don’t know about you, but, during the winter season my lips get so chapped! So I like to combat that by exfoliating with sugar or with an old toothbrush to get rid of the dead skin.

Supple Skin

Everyone wants a soft body so moisturize! I always get complimented by others about how soft my skin is! My secret, good ole vaseline! Yep, you don’t need a high priced lotion to make your skin soft and supple just get that vaseline out. Another tip is to put vaseline on your feet and then put on some socks to make them ultra soft and moisturized!

Prime it

To keep your makeup lasting all night get yourself a good primer and setting spray. These two aspects help with making your makeup last! For oily skin go for a more matte primer and setting spray. For normal to dry skin go for hydrating mists and primers to keep your skin luminous.

A Fine Base

With foundation use a beautyblender for an airbrushed look. Nobody wants cake face do they! Make sure the foundation you use is something you already will know will look good on you. You don’t want foundation oxidizing(getting darker over time) on you before you can even have your first kiss, right!

Flirty Lashes

I love having big flirty lashes. Use an eyelash curler and curl those lashes up to Jesus (in my Patrick Starr voice haha). I coat my lashes from root to tip and go over it 2-3 times however that’s my personal preference. If mascara gets on your lid simple clean it with a dry q-tip. You can also use lashes but if you don’t normally do this for your man then you don’t have to it now.

Sultry Eyes

For valentine’s day, sultry eyes are definitely in! I love smokey eye looks however you don’t have to be limited to browns, greys, and blacks go bolder with pretty purples and pinks. Don’t forget to blend out any harsh eyes. Check out this post for a pink smokey eye I created!

Romantic Scent

Fragrances are a must for this special day, who doesn’t want to smell good! Apply a light touch of perfume to back of your ear for a subtle smell. You can apply perfume to your pulse points such as your inner elbows, wrists, hollow of your neck and the back of your knees. Don’t over do it though. One tip I like to do is to apply a bit of vaseline to where I decide to put the fragrance so that it will last longer. Say for instance I put in on the inner elbows, so I’ll add a touch of vaseline and then spritz a tiny bit of perfume on it! Smelling good all night long!
So there you go a couple of tips I use that will help you look and feel ultra sexy for your partner or out with your girls!
In the comments below: What are some tips that you like to use to make a good first impression with a future partner?

Self-proclaimed “Cosmetics Cop” Paula Bougan, creator of Paula’s Choice cosmetics is in hot water with it’s loyal consumers as many of them call her out on her GLARING omission of ANY black women in their new Resist Serum Foundation. See for yourself:

My goodness. In this day and age when it is CLEAR that people of color spend billions of dollars on cosmetics, the “oversight” feels like a major slap in the face. And I’m glad people are dragging Paula’s Choice for ignoring us.

Paula’s Choice lame excuse for excluding black women:

Paula’s ChoiceHi ladies, thank you so much. As this is a new product, we need and value your input on shades so that we can continue to evolve it and make it the best it can be for all of our customers. We always strive to listen to our customers for any and all feedback, and your influence as a customer helps shape the direction we want to go. We’re committed to hearing your feedback and are constantly looking at ways to give you the best skin of your life. Thank you again for your valuable feedback.

However, people on the Facebook thread weren’t buying that stock answer:

Lame excuses from Paula’s Choice like “we didn’t know,” or “we’re still refining shades for the formula” blah blah blah won’t fly. They are well aware how much POC’s buy cosmetics. This omission was deliberate, and it’s high time folks call these companies out on their blatant attempts to pretend we don’t exist.

Personally, I’m furious. I’ve touted Paula’s Choice on this blog and have given raves for many of their product offerings in the past. I help line the pockets of companies that don’t think I’m important enough to include in their foundation line up.

UPDATE: Paula’s Choice has apologized, and claimed to be planning to fix the oversight. We’ll see.

I absolutely want to eat the Strawberry Rhubarb Mask from Eminence–its smells soooo good. But that’s not why I use it. Well; at least not the one reason. This gentle hydrating and exfoliating mask shrinks the pores along my cheekbones and gives my skin a plump, youthful glow. I keep it one five or ten minutes after I wash my face at night and it leaves it looking like this…

The smell of strawberries with the creamy texture is such a treat, and I notice when I do it at night right before bedtime I wake up to amazing looking skin that needs a lot less makeup.

I’m really surprised there isn’t more raving about Wonder Curl. It’s one of the best natural styling products I’ve used, and my absolute favorite is the Get Set Hair Jelly. It’s great for when you’re wearing buns or there protective styles and want to lay down your hairs or if you want a really defined twist out. Best of all it doesn’t flake. No…seriously. No white stuff.

Aveda Has Makeup Now!

I used to be an Aveda slave about a decade ago, but it fell out of favor with me for a while when I discovered that Estee Lauder bought them. I’ve recently tipped my toe back in on some products I’m beginning to like and will report on soon, but while I was at the store I discovered (probably way late) that Aveda has a makeup line. At first glance I was a little unimpressed, because like many natural makeup companies, women of darker hues are virtually ignored (that’s getting better though). When I saw their piddly collection of tinted foundation that ranged from ivory to “Becky Has a Tan,” I complained out loud that I’m sick of large companies ignoring women of color, and if they provided the colors, we would buy them. The attendant looked at me thoughtfully and then, wide eyed, said, “Wait! We just got a new color in. We haven’t even put it out of the shelf yet. It’s called ‘Bark.”

So I tried it, and it went on absolutely silky and left my skin with just the right amount of coverage with a dewy finish without making my face feel like it’s got cake frosting on it. It blended so nicely, I made good on my assertion and bought it on the spot. I’m wearing here…

Looks like my complexion just barely made the cut. Here’s to hoping they get a clue and get some darker shades.

Beyond Black &White was invited to the Indie Beauty Expo in Los Angeles last week to see all the new, tantalizing and mostly clean beauty products on the horizon, and we couldn’t be more thrilled to present them to you. The clear standouts are Honey Girl Organics, Au Naturale Cosmetics, DermaFlash, Darshana, Eve Organics Beauty,
Seaweed Bath Company, Julie Hewitt, Amazonia,  and PUR Attitude, plus a couple other honorable mentions. So let’s get started, shall we?

DERMAFLASH is an exfoliating device specifically created for the delicate skin on a woman’s face. It removes dead skin and built up debris from the surface and removes that pesky peach fuzz and side burns. This once-a-week treatment might be a good exfoliation alternative for those with skin too sensitive for chemical exfoliation because the process is mechanical. As a bonus, thanks to you removing layers of dead skin, your favorite skin care products will penetrate and work even better. Your foundation will also go on more smoothly, and you might discover using less of it.

However, we wouldn’t recommend you use it on areas with active acne breakouts–it will draw blood. After treatment your skin will feel baby smooth, if not a bit raw. The kit contains both a prep wash and a soothing finishing treatment. Cost, $189 Post script: for nearly $200, you should be able to exfoliate and remove peach fuzz from not just for face, but your whole body. The author tried it, and it worked. You can use this on your whole body to make it as smooth as a baby’s buttocks, but beware–you can only use the blade one time. If you try to reuse, the apparatus will not work.

PUR Attitude Insta-results Face Lift Gel was a created by a company dedicated to providing safe and effective skin care–not just heavily-fragranced serums in pretty bottles. This serum is formulated to instantly plump up wrinkles and firm the skin to visibly erase fine lines, deep wrinkles, crow’s feet, smile lines, and forehead furrows, but one benefit we really like and are kind of shocked it’s not promoted is it’s ability to remarkably reduce the appearance of large pores. No; we’re not kidding–those tiny holes close tight and the effect lasts for hours. But while all the ingredients used in the serum are safe, it can be potentially drying, so make sure you face is slightly damp (not wet) when you apply and follow up with a light moisturizer. $65

Honey Girl Organics is made freshly harvested organic beeswax and organic raw honey with is a natural antibacterial and anti inflammatory. Honey Girl Organics boasts that their products are so pure you can eat them, so super sensitive girls can rest easy. Their face and eye cream is so rich and soothing, especially during the cold, dry winter. It’s also economically priced at around $32 and a little goes a long way.

Erbaviva Organic Deodorant is made from pure organic essential oils and grain alcohol. Not only is it organic, chemical and cruelty free, it works. We’re all for natural ways to keep your pits stink free, because the harmful ingredients in many commercial deodorants and antiperspirants have aluminum that have been linked to Alzheimer’s and hormone disruption. For more on how icky commercial deodorants are, click here. Honorable mention in this product line are the Firming Salts and Firming Oil, which are heaven when used in combination for a pre-shower scrub. Deodorant is $26 but will probably last a year or two, depending on your funk levels.

Amazonia Potent Cell Renewal Nightly Rejuvenation Treatment is a mouthful to say, but it’s worth every letter. We got a chance to speak with the creator, Stephany at the Indie Beauty Expo in Los Angeles, and learned what motivated her to create this product. “I wanted skin care that didn’t just look pretty in a bottle, but actually DID something.”

Don’t let the fancy bamboo packaging fool you–what’s inside is effective. The night treatment gently exfoliates the skin using natural ingredients like lactic acid and willow bark extract. Hylauronic acid plumps the skin, chamomile extract soothes, Guto Kola stimulates collagen production and lavender hydrosol promotes cell repair. This is definitively a luxury skin care line and will set you back $145. But you’ll soon learn Amazonia is much more than a pretty bottle.

We absolutely LOVE that Eve Organics Beauty provides a spectrum of browns for women of color. Your blog mistress is currently wearing TOAST. It made for medium/dark skin tones with more yellow undertones than red.

The mineral foundation feels light and won’t leave a chalky, dull cast and brings out a “glow” without looking oily.

They have more to the line than foundation, and we’re looking forward to trying some of the other items. Sit tight–we’ll let you know. Cost $27.

Julie Hewett is a Los Angeles-based hair and makeup artist who is seriously channeling Old Hollywood with her “Femme Noir” matte lipstick. Totally NOT drying, the key ingredient is camellia oil, touted for its high antioxidant content and anti aging properties. We love the super-rich payoff, velvety feel, and the fact that the line contains no cancer-linked parabens. Yours Truly is sporting it here. Fabulous, is it not?

Cost, $24.

Okay; not even gonna lie. We don’t like Darshana. We LOVE Darshana. Like...looooove. The creator of the line, Darius Irani, was inspired by the hair grooming practices of the people of India–the home of his father. He saw him use all sort of oils in his hair, and well…we all know that Indians have amazing hair, right? He threw in a dash of Ayurveda and presto! Darshana was born. The company started with the oil, but once word caught on (NaturallyCurly.com gave them an award for ‘Best of the Best’) they decided to expand the line with a shampoo and conditioner. Yours Truly used all of them, and the shampoo smells delicious and cleans without stripping, and the conditioner, combined with the oil gives amazing conditioning and slip so there’s less breakage and shedding when detangling. The formulations are pH balanced so your hair feels amazingly soft. For Afro-textured hair, be sure to leave a bit on once you towel dry. You’ll thanks us later. Ingredients like honey, organic aloe, provitamin B5 for long-lasting moisture in addition to the oils and your hair will love you forever. Buy the complete set for $66.

Au Naturale Cosmetics

We’re big fans of Au Naturale, and we’ve been raving about them for a while. They’ve got some major innovations on the way, including a spray mineral foundation powder and a lip stain. We’ve tested the stain and not only is it emollient and long-lasting, the colors are deep and rich. But if you want to try it, you’ll have to wait a month or so. They’ll make their announcement soon.

The Seaweed Bath Company has come a long way since its humble beginnings. Beyond Black & White was there when they first debuted their seaweed-based bath products at the Natural Product Expo. Now their products can be found at Whole Foods, Sprouts, and other places where healthy beauty products are sold. They’ve now expanded the line to include facial care, and we’re so here for it. The Restore-Protect Eye Cream can be used day or night and works to reduce fine lines and make your eye area look more refreshed. Honorary mention to their Restoring Marine Night TherapyCream. Both products (and the entire line for that matter) harnesses the power of seaweed extract to improve the overall condition of the skin and contains no potentially irritating fragrance.

Have you ever wanted to learn how to cut your crease like the instagram models, wear that bright red lipstick you’ve been itching to wear, or bake your face? Well today I want to share with you some beauty hacks to some of the holidays most gorgeous beauty looks!

Cut Your Crease with a Spoon!

Wonder how these insta models have amazing cut creases well that may have some skills but you have a spoon! Yep get a spoon out and cut that crease! Get a darker color and add it to your crease then blend out and softened with other shades. (Check out this tutorial)

Make Your Lips Look Whiter with Red Lipstick!

Don’t have time to buy a whitening teeth kit why not try brighter teeth with bright lipstick! This is the perfect time of the year to rock red lipsticks! Go for blue-based colors instead of yellow-based colors!

To get kissable lips for the mistletoe, get a tooth brush!

Yep, brush your teeth with a clean toothbrush to get rid of dead skin. In the winter your lips get chapped and cracked counteract that with exfoliation. You don’t necessarily need lip scrubs all you need is a cheap toothbrush! Plus it aids in plumping the lips for a short period of time!

Glitter Nails!

Have you ever seen those glitter nails on pinterest that looks completely perfect! Well look no further because all you need is your favorite glitter nail polish and a wedge makeup sponge. All you have to do is apply the base coat as normal, then apply the nail polish onto the edge of a makeup sponge and dab the sponge onto your nail. The sponge soaks up the actual liquid part of the nail polish and leaves behind just the glitter! Cool Right! Apply a top coat and you are good to go! (Check out this tutorial)

Bake the Face!

To keep your makeup lasting longer use translucent powder to set your face. I myself don’t like to leave powder on my face I like to just put it on and brush it off just because I have dryer skin. However if you have oilier skin bake your face and leave on for 5-10 minutes. (Check out this tutorial)

So which one do you want to try for the holidays?! For me I definitely want to try the cut crease would you like to see a Beauty Look on that for a New Years Makeup Tutorial?
