I LOVE being in the know about beauty products you don’t always get to see and experience because of silly reasons like limited shelf space at Sephora. Did you know there are literally thousands of products you might not ever see because the big companies have the big marketing budgets to keep their stuff in your line of sight? Thank goodness for events like the Indie Beauty Expo, where bloggers like me can be introduced to quality products and share our experiences with the world. There were LOTS of items I loved at the expo, but since it’s Black History Month, I want to start by talking about two black-woman owned beauty companies that are producing some excellent products.

Creme Corps KARITE Shea Butter Hydrating Body Cream

Wow. Just…wow. Southern California has been plagued with hot, dry winds this winter known as the “Santa Anas.” It literally feels like a blow dryer is blowing hot air on your body, and it robs the atmosphere of what little moisture we have. The results are dry, ashy, tight skin. KARITE Shea Butter has been giving my skin life. The company was formed by three brilliant Ghanian sisters (literally and figuratively) with collective backgrounds in medicine, marketing, law and economics.

Together they’ve creating a rich, NATURAL, and soothing formulation of shea-butter based creme, minus all the yucky fillers and added nonsense. I love using this after I’ve done a body scrub and bath and go right to bed. My skin feels like a baby’s bum the next day, and frankly, I can’t stop touching myself. Don’t just me–I’m a tactile type.

Ellie Bianca All Natural Body Oil (Rose)

Smells like heaven, works like a charm. While this product is touted as “body oil” that also includes the face. I just did a pretty heavy mask and scrub and then followed up with this oil and my face absolutely loved it. Shea oil is the base, followed by sunflower, sweet almond, olive, jojoba and a host of other skin-loving oils.

You can be assured of the following

  • Vegan
  • All Natural
  • Non-GMO
  • Cruelty-Free*
  • Ethically and Sustainably Sourced
  • Certified Organic / Organically Grown

The brainchild behind Ellie Bianca is Kenyan-born Evelyne Nyairo.

Love that these women are doing some amazing things and creating quality products worth buying!

I have been on a nomadic search for the perfect purple lipstick that doesn’t make me look ridiculous. My search is over, and hellooooo SMASH BOX “Make It Reign,” a shade from their AlWAYS ON LIQUID LIP collection.

I wore it yesterday for a few videos and posted on Instagram and tons of people were clamoring to find out the shade. SMASHBOX is on to something with this formulation, which is FREE of the nasties (harmful and/or toxic ingredients) and has a touch of metallic pearl that gives amazing depth to the shading while still maintaining a matte finish. The staying power is amazing, and if you choose to top with a clear gloss, you’re going to have a nice little pop.

I have about five different shades from the line now, and all but one are a hit. If you’d like to know what shades from this line will look good on you, they have an amazing new technology that allows you to see what the shades will look like on you, via photo upload, or looking through a stable of models that match your skin shade. Check it out!

I’m always open to discovering light, paraben-free foundations that give good coverage and keep my shiny nose at bay. That’s why I was excited when Veil Cosmetics asked me to review their Sunset Skin collection. It’s oil-free, paraben-free, and doesn’t feel like I’m putting a brown mask over my face.

The true test of an effective foundation for me is how it stands up to video and lights. What do you think?

In these photos I’m wearing Sunset Skin shade, 5P. It has hints of pink undertone, and my natural undertones are yellow, but it still looks so lovely.

I have a feeling however, that 5N, that has both pink and gold to make it neutral might be even better. Lucky for me I’ll be meeting with the creators of Veil Cosmetics later this week at Makeup Show Los Angeles!

I’m a seriously naturalista as most of you know, and I’m not shy about sharing my favorites with all of you. While the natural cosmetics industry has gained popularity, it is still woefully skinny when it comes to black-owned companies. That’s why I was DELIGHTED when the creator of Naturally Glorious, Gloria Cone, reached out to me to try the products she’s created. The 100% natural line of products were inspired because Gloria was fighting Pityriasis Alba, a form of eczema that causes dry, light spots on the face and body.

The line is comprised of the Creamy Cleanser, Eye Cream, and Moisturizer. All of them are all natural, and the packaging is lovely!

Creamy Cleanser: Don’t expect this cleaners to foam. It’s well…creamy. It will gently cleanse your face and leave it feeling clean, but not dry. I like a stronger cleanser for nighttime use, but I this is perfect for the morning wash and prep before applying makeup.

Eye Cream & Moisturizer: Both are super moisturizing and hydrating, and seems to brighten the eye area a bit. My skin felt so soft and smooth without leaving an oily residue. Here’s a photo right after use. Loved that while the products are moisturizing, it didn’t leave the pores in my T-zone looking like gaping maws, and not overly greasy looking.

If I have any complaint, it would be that there was a little bit more product, at least with the creamy cleanser. You won’t go wrong getting the three-piece gift set. It’s comparably priced as other luxury natural products, and you’ll be supporting a sister doing her thing!

My New Skin Care Discovery Whilst Being Price Gouged at the Spa http://www.beyondblackwhite.com/new-skin-care-discovery-whilst-price-gouged-spa/ Tue, 19 Sep 2017 01:59:36 +0000 http://www.beyondblackwhite.com/?p=43270 A couple weeks ago I visited the spa at Montage, a five-star property in Laguna Hills, California. A couple weeks ago I visited the spa at Montage, a five-star property in Laguna Hills, California. Sometimes I like to visit the boutique where they sell the products they use in their treatments more  because there’s always something new to obsess about when you’re a natural product junkie like me.

I perused the store, and it’s what you’d expect–$200 plush robes and fancy skin care products you won’t find at Sephora. I saw my favorite staple, Eminence, an amazing organic skin care line imported from Europe. But a new (for me) brand caught my eye–OSEA, a product line that uses seaweed as an ingredient for many of their formulations. I love that the ingredients are non-toxic, vegan, and non-carcinogenic. As important, they work. While I’m not claiming to have tried all their products, the ones that I have are giving me great results.

The Ocean Cleansing Mud was the first standout. It’s aimed for oily to combination and blemish prone skin, and applying it gives you a tingling, stimulating feel from the tea tree, peppermint and rosemary oils it contains.  I tried a sample and loved it, so I came back to purchase a full bottle. I noted the cost–$55. Steep; yes…but not unheard of.

But as obsessive about research and curious about other products as I am, I decided to visit the company website. I discovered that the real retail cost is $44. That’s about a 20% increase on what already a retail markup!! Traditional retail is about 100% over wholesale, so the spa most likely purchased this product for $22 or even less.

Later on, I looked at other products I’d purchased or looked at there…like a body scrub they were charging for $60 which real retail was $48. The Lip and Eye Serum I picked up for $75? The real price is $60.

Now I know this spa is at a fancy resort full of wealthy people, but most of them didn’t get wealthy by paying more for things than they have to.

I called the spa and asked about the discrepancy and they really expressed little defense of the price gouging, and said they charge a premium because you can test the products before you buy and you can get them right when you want them, as opposed to going on the internet (btw OSEA’s shipping is free with a $75 or more purchase).

Let’s see…charge customers 20% or more above the retail price because they get to tinker in your FREE SAMPLES? Yeah…that makes sense. In an age when you can look up a company from your phone and cross check prices instantaneously, it’s an unbelievably cynical and greedy thing to do, and I hope the folks at OSEA know that their products are being exploited in such a way.

The good news is that I discovered an amazing new product that’s worth the share, and my skin loves them. My advice? Go to Montage for the scenery and the food. Have some mojitos by the pool overlooking the Pacific and skip the spa completely.

You basically need to be hiding under a rock to not have heard about Rhianna’s new cosmetics line, Fenty Beauty. My Facebook timeline is full of friends posting selfies ecstatic over the huge range of coverage–especially for browner hues. My favorite YouTube beauty vloggers were loving it too, and I knew I had to at least go into my local Sephora to see for myself what all the fuss was about.

I’d heard that Fenty was selling out of their browner shades so I aimed to get there early. I was not in luck. The two shades that looked absolutely flawless on me–#400 and/or #430–were all gone. I asked if there might be some in back stock. Again, no luck. The darker shades are selling out faster than any of the others. So much for makeup companies complaining that dark shades don’t sell.

The funny thing about those two colors is that, at first, it looks as if these shades would be too light. How the formula looks in the bottle versus how it comes to life on your face are vastly different, so I advise anyone who hasn’t gone into a Sephora to test the shades to know their color not order online until you know for sure.

The coverage looked so natural…even in the sun. I didn’t even put any on my neck and it blended so well there was no need.

The foundation is the star of this show for me. The coverage is incredible. The formulation has a matte finish, which is absolutely PERFECT for me because after five minutes under filming lights I start looking like an oil slick. Those with dryer skin might want to use a sheer moisturizer before application. I like that it felt light and breathable, and after a few hours my shine was still under control.

Now for the ingredients. Don’t get it twisted–Fenty is not a “clean” or “green” beauty product. However, it does not contain parabens, and is vegan and cruelty-free. Black women should be extra careful about the use of parabens in cosmetics, because they’ve been linked to breast and reproductive cancers. While I also purchased the Conceal, Contour, Highlight set and the Kilowatt Freestyle Highlighter Duo, I’m a bit disappointed that both contain aluminum and dimethicone, which is definitely not on the “green friendly” list.

Bottom line: I’ll definitely be using this for my video and photo shoots, but it won’t replace my regular “green beauty” rotation. It will be my “guilty pleasure” choice when I need my makeup to be absolutely flawless and long-wearing.

If you’re looking for cleaner beauty at Sephora, Tarte is it.

Have you tried Fenty Beauty yet? What are you thoughts? Share your pics!
