Were you surprised as I was when Oprah was recently featured in a commercial stating that she’s ready to let 2016 be the year of her ‘best body’ and asked you to join her?

I’ve watched her yoyo in her weight for decades, and I love the fact that she’s been able to somewhat maintain her weight loss (trust me, she used to be really big) and still have a voluptuous, feminine figure.

At age 61, I think it’s a good idea, however, to drop the weight and keep it dropped, so Oprah, I’m all in support! You’re worth $3 billion, but your health is priceless.

What the heck?! Let’s all make it the year of our best body! I’ll skip the weight watchers, but I’m ready to shake my workout routine a bit.

Here’s 8 exercises I’m taking into 2016, and why:

Sun Salutations: This is a very soothing vinyasa yoga flow that works as a great warm up for any exercise routine. You can do a couple, or do enough to work up a sweat. The proper breathing also works to relax you, lower your blood pressure and regulate your central nervous system.

Warrior 1: This is a deep inner thigh stretch, calorie burner and muscle builder. Try holding this pose first for 30 seconds, then a full minute, and then two! Thigh muscles on fleek!!

Roll Ups: I like this exercise because it engages my core while simultaneously activating my spine and relieving my low back pain. I’ve learned that the best way to tackle low back problems is by building a strong core. It’s important to make sure you back is flush to the mat, though! Start with 10 and see if you can work up to two sets.

Thigh Bends: Works the front thigh movement will get you to the burn pretty quickly. Just do this one until is burns…that’s when you know you’ve done enough! 😉

Boat Pose and Upright Crunches: Feel the burn! No; really. Feel it, then stop.

Leg Lifts: Ever wonder what exercise gets that lower pooch? This will do it. Ten is a good start, and see if you can work your way up to five sets of 10!

Squats: Best for the butt and thighs as far as I’m concerned. Don’t rush through the sets on this. Make slow, deliberate movements and be sure to really SQUEEZE the buttocks tight on the way back up. Work your way up to at least five sets of 10.

Russian Twists with a Weighted Ball: Great oblique exercise that will get your heart beating faster and your biceps tingling!

These are a good investment. The uses are endless.

I won’t and will never have a big, juicy booty like those hotties on Instagram you see, but that doesn’t mean I’m not working to keep the derrière.

In addition to the 3.5 hours of yoga I do every week, I take some time out to squats during any downtime I have, because I keep the 7-pound dumbbells in the family room (adjacent to the kitchen) handy.

When I’m waiting for my coffee to warm up in the Keurig, I do squats. When I’m brushing my teeth, I do squats for the entire two minutes recommended by the American Dental Association. basically, I get it in where I can fit it in.

But now I’m ready to up my reps and found this handy dandy chart that I’d like to share. Who’s willing to do the challenge too?

Side plank

Building upon the previous yoga poses to target problem areas, take a gander at how side plank can trim off and tone those love handles.

But it must be said, the BEST way to trim belly fat is through your diet. That means cutting out processed foods, white sugar, white rice and flour and potatoes. You also have to watch your intake of the sugary mixed alcoholic drinks. Oh. No beer either. I drink very dry wines–like Chardonnay and Pinot Noir–but even those have to be consumed in moderation.

So keep in mind that the above demonstration will be of virtually no use to you IF you don’t monitor what’s going on your fork.

How to Do Side Plank Pull Ups

Go into the side plank position, first bearing weight on your right hand. Try to be in a straight, 45 degree angle, with your left foot slightly in front for balance. Raise you left arm, and imagine that a string is pulling your middle slowly up, pause and engage the muscles, and then back into position. Try not to use your arms to lift. Isolate your muscles as much as possible. Do a set of 10, then switch sides.

I’m a firm believer that yoga is the world’s most perfect exercise. It relaxes, detoxifies, and tones. Put some pep into it and it can eve be a cardio workout to assist with boosting your metabolism and contribute to weight loss. Sun salutations is a basic yoga vinyasa (flow) that if done for five to ten minutes, or until you feel muscle fatigue is a great way to start your morning or end your day. One the days you can’t get to the gym, you can do this flow while you’re watching your favorite prime time show.

Here’s the overview:

Sun Salutations

The first move, you reaching up to the sky, lengthens and elongates the spine (1). Forward fold activates the hamstrings (2, 3). “Monkey looking up” activates the upper back muscles and the shoulders (4). Plank activates your center core muscles (5). Here’s a challenge–try staying in plank for a whole minute. That will get you sweating! Up dog reverses the movement of the spine from down to up, and activates the lower lumbar region of the back as well as your shoulders and biceps (6,7 (chaturanga). Down dog–believe it or not–is a resting pose (8). It activates the upper shoulders stretches your calves and hamstrings.

Since I don’t watch ratchet reality shows, I have no idea whether or not Kenya Moore is the enemy or not, so please don’t judge me. The extent of my knowledge of her is that she starts on “Real Housewives of Atlanta,” she’s a former beauty pageant winner, and she has a delicious juicy booty. And since I’m a fan of juicy booties on pretty brown ladies, I’d thought I’d share that Miss (Mrs.?) Moore has a new boot-busting DVD in which she will show you how you can have such beautiful backside deliciousness from the comfort of your own home.

Now I have to be honest–I’m not totally impressed with Kenya’s teaching skills. She pretty much doesn’t in the entire first half. She looks cute and participates while the real person who created this workout walks the audience through. I mean, it’s okay if you need to feel like a celebrity is getting down and dirty working out with you in your living room, but I’m more impressed with the people who actually put in the effort to create and teach.

However, there are some good booty-busting sections included, so it might be worth checking out. Wait. I just Googled and discovered there’s some sort of weird competition going on with her and some chick named Phaedra. What a SHOCK! These chicks even have to have drama around a dang workout DVD.

In an article titled, “Phaedra Park, Kenya Moore in Booty Battle over Workout Videos,” Moore said this:

“Whether you are #TeamStallion or team broke-down donkey, my fitness video sales have broken records and the video is and remains more successful than hers,” Moore posted on her Bravo blog, referencing the Amazon rankings. “The facts are the facts. I’ve outsold her and have the more successful video.”

I swear, the way women sometimes treat each other makes me want to completely give up on humanity and hurl myself off a jagged Grecian cliff with my flabby ass flapping in the wind as I hurl to my doom.
