Getting sick is one of the most unpleasant experiences in life. It can cause us to miss work, be unable to do things around the house, and just feel bad. It also costs us money for doctor visits and medication, and if the diagnosis is difficult, that cost can really skyrocket. Throw in the uncomfortable nature of some illnesses and things just get worse.

What works better than anything is to try not to get sick to begin with. When it comes to our health, it’s absolutely true that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. The best way to start out on the path to avoiding sickness is to look within our homes. We spend most of our time there, and more important than that, we have the most control there.

Sometimes it’s hard to accept that something in our home could be making us sick, but very frequently, that is exactly what has caused the illness. So let’s look at some of the things in the home that we should be watching for.

Pests

Most of us take great pride in maintaining a clean home, and we often feel that since we see no bugs, we have no bugs. Unfortunately, many of the worst pests are talented at staying hidden until we’ve all gone to bed. Cockroaches are a great example. They come out at night and can track bacteria from unclean areas like the bathroom into the areas where we eat.

Getting ahead of cockroaches, flies, ants, and all the other unwanted visitors can be done in great measure by the homeowner, but one firm providing pest control in Orange County CA can attest to the inevitability of the need for professional intervention, especially for prevention. Get a contract for pest control and prevent the problem from returning.

Mold

There has been a certain hysteria in the media at times about Stachybotrys and other molds that have been blamed for a myriad of mysterious chronic illnesses in families. It has led to quite a bit of unwarranted work and expense to mitigate problems that may not really be there.

While researchers cannot definitively link the sensationalized “sick house” molds with actual medical cases, some mold spores can impact your health. The truth is that there are two basic types of mold illnesses. The first is the typical allergic reaction that you may also experience with pollen, dust, or pet dander. The second is the type where the mold itself is toxic and causes illness.

The good news is that while mold cleanup can be costly, prevention is more practical. Have a home inspection done before buying, and then maintain appropriate moisture levels in the home. Run a dehumidifier if the air needs to be drier. Improve ventilation in attics, crawlspaces, cabinets, and basements. Moisture is the food that mold craves, so keep things dry.

Carbon Monoxide

One of the most deadly and common things in a home where natural gas, propane or wood are used for cooking or heating is carbon monoxide. Malfunctioning furnaces, failing water heaters, and leaky ovens can create a cloud of invisible, odorless gas that can prove deadly.

The challenge of carbon monoxide is that it can be present in small quantities for a long time and produce nondescript symptoms that might mirror the flu or other common maladies.

Rather than risk exposure, every home should be equipped with carbon monoxide detectors. Children should understand that these alarms are just as serious as those for fire. In the meantime, have equipment properly maintained and serviced.

Our homes should be sanctuaries where we can avoid the dangers of the outside world. Yet sometimes there are unwanted issues in our homes that can make it just as dangerous as anything we encounter elsewhere. Preventing these issues can go a long way towards making our home the safe, clean place we want it to be.

A recent independent study conducted by the Coalition for Safer Food Processing and Packaging on 40 different brands indicated that phthalate in mac and cheese is present at high levels. Phthalates have an industrial use that softens plastic, and…I guess, flavoring powdered cheese.

But what’s the harm, you ask? Phthalate has been linked to low testosterone levels in male rats, and linked to reproductive disruption that can affect fertility. There’s also a study suggesting this substance could be linked to childhood asthma and obesity.

Presence of phthalates aren’t added to the ingredients in powdered cheese products. Rather, it sloughs off from the machines used in processing the package. Phthalates attach to fat, so it makes sense that high amounts are found in cheese.

As a mom of four kids who LOVE their mac and cheese (especially if Mom is running late with dinner and stomachs are grumbling) this gives me major pause. The more you eat, the more likely to have significant exposure. Guess I’m going to have to make more batches of the real stuff.

If it seems no matter how hard you try to lose weight, you just can’t seem to make friends with your bathroom scale, you’re not alone. Many people struggle with weight loss and go through a series of fad diets and exercise sessions without ever getting to their desired weight.

Taking a different approach to losing weight

It’s a fact of life, that what works for some doesn’t necessarily work for another. Going through years of failed attempts at weight loss can really take its toll on your mental state of health. After a while, you might even resign yourself to the fact that this is the way it’s going to be and that you’re just going to have to learn to love yourself the way you are.
Instead of trying for a quick weight loss it’s time to commit to losing the weight slowly under the supervision and guidance of a trained professional.

Hiring a personal trainer

Making the decision to hire a personal trainer doesn’t have to mean that you have someone come to your home and spend ridiculous money to get into shape. Many fitness centers and gyms like Fitness 19 have personal trainers on staff. These personal trainers are available for private sessions that you can schedule at the facility. They can help you to achieve your weight loss goals by creating a workout that targets the areas that need the most reshaping. By doing this at a gym you’ll also have access to other equipment and classes offered, helping to keep your routine fresh and effective.

Benefits of a personal trainer

A personal trainer does more than help to reshape your body. They also understand the balancing act between eating the right foods and exercise. By changing your diet and removing certain foods, like processed, you can lose the weight and keep it off. A personal trainer also knows how to keep you motivated and sets short-term goals to encourage weight loss. For instance, if you need to lose 25 lbs., you would set monthly goals of a few pounds until you reach your desired weight.

Activity equals weight loss

Sitting idle and not working out isn’t going to get the weight off. Even if you fast on a fad diet it only removes the weight and does not build muscle mass. Fad diets also don’t work because you take the weight off too quickly. In order to maintain a healthy weight, you need a combination of a nutritious diet and regular exercise. By doing the two together, you’re reshaping your body and building muscle in place of fat. Give your workout routine everything you have and enjoy the lasting benefits.

Sticking with it

Of course, the only way using a personal trainer works is if you stay committed to getting into shape and go to the gym 2 to 3 times per week. Some people bring a friend as a way to reinforce their efforts. If this works, use it. You need to remember that the weight didn’t appear overnight and in order to lose it, you’re going to need to invest time. The good news is that once you achieve your goal, with the training and guidance you received you’ll know how to stay in shape going forward.

Unfortunately, not everyone can eat what they want and not gain weight. Many people are simply more prone to carry a heavier looking frame than others. With a little help from a professional, you too can look and feel great.

Diseases once thought to be virtually eliminate or at least under control have reared their ugly heads. Chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis are making a comeback, and you’d better be careful about who you’re giving your goodies to without protection. According to the Center for Disease Control, is blaming the increase in the disease spike to online dating, with the highest increase with men having sex with men. But ask any black woman who has been a victim of a downlow male’s advances, straight women aren’t safe.

BY THE NUMBERS

110 million

Estimated total number of STD infections in the U.S.

478.8

Chlamydia cases per 100,000 people

5.9%

Increase in chlamydia cases from 2014 to 2015—an all-time high

12.8%

Rate increase in gonorrhea

19%

Rate increase in syphilis

Ladies, be careful. Gone untreated these diseases can cause long-term damage like infertility and infant death. While online dating has made it a lot easier to find someone special or just someone to hook up with there’s a shadow side to it all. There are men who make hooking up with as many women online as a game, and men like that aren’t above being sexually reckless.

Bottom line: birth control won’t stop STDs. Condoms, condoms, condoms, ladies.

I know how it is. You’re at the drug store, and you need to pick up some lipstick, lotion, and conditioning cream for your hair. You’re on a budget–you oscillate between the $1.99 lipstick and the $10 one. You opt for the one just under two bucks and make similar decisions for the other items. While this may seem like a win, if that lipstick, lotion, and hair cream contain parabens, the health ramifications can cost you big time in the long run.

What are parabens? Parabens are a type of preservative used in cosmetics and skin care products, and has been used since the 1950’s. The problem with parabens is that the mimic the female hormone, estrogen, and has been linked to early puberty, reproductive problems and breast cancer. According to some reports 85% of cosmetics have parabens.

Here’s how you can identify if a product contains parabens: basically anything that ends with “paraben” like butylparaben, methylparaben, and propylparaben. You can usually spot them towards the bottom of the ingredients list. Don’t be shortsighted when it comes to your health–saving a few dollars now and then losing your good health and undergoing costly medical treatments to save your life isn’t a logical payoff!

My mother is a breast cancer surviver. Much of her cosmetics and personal items (deodorant, lotion, face creams) contain parabens, and over time, most likely contributed to her cancer diagnosis. But while she’s cancer free, the medication has taken it’s toll. It aged her 30 years in appearance. Her hair has never grown back from the chemotherapy meds.

I’ve eliminated ALL cosmetics that contain parabens, and I urge you to do the same. Now that there is more awareness about the dangers of this preservative, many companies have provided products that don’t contain them. Here are a few:

people, emotions, stress and health care concept - unhappy african american young woman touching her head and suffering from headache

When you are sexually active you do not often think about all the bad things that can happen. There are a lot of health risks that can be involved when you have sex and these types of things really need to be thought of before you and your partner even think about having sex. You should be sure that you both take the time to know each other and what your sexual history is beforehand.

Minor Infections

There is a good majority of sexually transmitted diseases that you can contract from unprotected sex. There are also some non-STD infections that you can get from sex as well. Urinary tract infection is among the worst that you can get. If you find that when you are peeing and feel a burning sensation, the chances are that you have a UTI and will want to get urinary tract infection treatments immediately. The treatment for something like this is a series of oral antibiotics. The doctor will also tell you that you need to drink a lot of fluids – cranberry juice is a good one – so that you flush your bladder out.

The Big One

HIV/AIDS is one of the biggest issues with unprotected sex today. It can hit anyone regardless of sexual orientation, age, or race. It is very important that you get tested periodically if you are sexually active. Especially if you have sex with multiple partners and if they are people that you do not know well. Not everyone is going to be forthcoming with the issues that they have; some may not even know they have it until it is too late. This is the reason you should always use protection and talk to your partner about these things beforehand.

STD Prevention

There are a lot of things that you can think about doing if you want to reduce the risk or altogether prevent the spread of STD’s.

·  Abstaining from sex is the best way to prevent the spreading of STD’s

·  Stay with a single partner that you know does not have any form of STD

·  You should wait and get verification, abstain from vaginal and anal sex until you know that you and your partner are free of STD

·  There are some diseases that you can get vaccinated for. You should always go with this.

·  Condoms and dental dams are good ways to help keep diseases at bay as long as they are used properly

·  Do not do a lot of drinking or drug use. This will often lead to sexual promiscuity.

·  Proper communication is always the first line of defense. Talk to your partner about all the risks and possibilities.

Sometimes it is inevitable and someone is bound to contract an STD. Some of them can be easily treated and others there is no known cure for. It can be very devastating to find out that you or a loved one has an STD. There are always support groups around that you can go to talk to other people that are in the same situation as you are. Visiting your doctor or contacting your local health department is something that should be done so that you can set up a treatment program to help you through whatever you may have.
