State of the Union Address: Pomp and Circumstance or Prolific Event?
Last week, President Obama performed one of his annual duties by delivering his State of the Union Address before a joint session of Congress. Democrats and Republicans, Senators and Representatives, and even common voters alike looked on as he touted some of his major accomplishments from his first term. But, after seeing so many of these in the past resulting in little action from Congress, particularly those from President Obama, one must wonder, is the State of Union Address just a formality now or is it worth all the attention it receives?

Chris Dorner Burned Alive: Is This a Movie or Real Life?
Does that name sound vaguely familiar? Well, if you reside in Southern California, you probably know his name all too well. The 33-year-old SoCal resident allegedly went on a killing spree beginning two weeks ago on Super Bowl Sunday. He is reported to have killed two Irvine residents, one Riverside police man and another officer just yesterday in the Big Bear Lake area. All the while, he evaded capture by setting his own car ablaze and escaping to remote locations on foot. Sound fake? It’s not.

In the Wake of Newtown: Chicago Mother Loses All Four Children to Gun Violence
Amidst all of the hustle and bustle of of Congress’ jumbled talk about gun policy, the black community is yet reminded of the dire consequences associated with untamed gun violence. Since Newtown, the city of Chicago has seen 50 deaths at the hands of gunmen. One of those deaths was the last surviving child of a woman named Shirley Chambers. Her 33-year-old son, Ronnie Chambers (picture right below), was killed while sitting in a parked car.

Nine Year-Old Phenom Quvenzhané Wallis Gets Oscar Nod
I got the thrill of the day while watching Good Morning America when the news of the Oscar nominees broke in live. Most of the movies and actors I knew of but was blown away when they got the category of ‘Best Actress’. There was Jessica Chastain for “Zero Dark Thirty,” Jennifer Lawrence for “Siver Linings Playbook,” Naomi Watts for “The Impossible,” Emmanuelle Riva for “Amour” I was listning to the nominees and thought, “ok yeah, yeah whatever. Lastly, they announced Quvenzhané Wallis for Beast of the Southern Wild. My concentration was broken for the next few hours as I rushed to look up all I could on this wonderfully talented little girl.
