Apparently throwing like a girl is the new black.  Mo’Ne Davis a 13 yr old girl from Phillidelphia is taking her team, the Taney Dragons, all the way to the Little League World Series. Why is this such a big deal? Well in the last 7 decades only 16 girls have had the luxury of playing at the Little Legue World Series. Not only is she an amazing pitcher (she pitched a complete shut out in her latest game) but according to her coach she is also a leader on her team which says a lot in a male dominated sport. Mo’Ne is one of two girls scheduled to compete at the Little League world Series, Canadian Emma March being the second. The third time that a pair of women has made it this far. I hope they can face each other at the final!

Is it just me, but is there some special gene that footballers have in common that makes them smoking hot? I mean, I’m a soccer mom in name only–I have no idea about all the rules and other stuff, my kids are in soccer camp this week in hopes that they’ll be less pathetic at sports than I am. But even I–sports challenged as I am–can not miss all the eye candy I’m seeing. It also doesn’t help that these guys have the kind of physique I love…long, lean, and muscles everywhere.

Here’s  a few that stand out for me…

Fabian Schär…he’s Swiss. He’s 6’1, and 187 pounds of delicious.

Oh hello, Olivier Giroud. Oh French cuisine has never looked so decadent. Yummy feast for the eyes. Wonder where he’s directed that tongue…

Mama Mia…Claudio Marchisio, the Italian Stallion. He looks kind of like white Jesus to me without the long hair.

And then there’s the dark and mysterious Mariano Andújar from Argentina. This guy has nice, chiseled features. He’s gonna make some purdee babies.

And let’s not forget the hotties we grow on good old American soil. Three cheers for Graham Zusi and his scrumptious chin.

The NFL’s first openly gay draft pick for the Rams was exuberant at the news that he made the team that he kissed his boyfriend. Tongues are wagging. I don’t follow sports unless my husband makes me, but this stood out for a variety of reasons. Yes; he’s black. Yes; he’s gay. Yes; his boyfriend is white. And you know what I say? Live and let live.

I know of two gay men in my own family, and I can tell you that they showed signs of their preferences before they even knew what sex was. Both of my cousins hid far in the closet and had terrible outcomes. One succumbed to AIDS at the height of the epidemic in 1997. The other feigned heterosexuality, had a daughter out of wedlock and does not speak to her. Both were devastating effects of having to hide who they really were as a result of family and social pressure.

I’m all for people being who they are and not LYING about it. So double kudos, Michael Sam, for being drafted and not putting some poor, unsuspecting woman at risk because you’re trying to hide your sexuality.

People gotta be who they are, whether we like it or not.

The Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics are underway, which, for ice skating aficionado’s means multiple chances to watch lithe athletic women being hoisted in the air by their equally lithe and athletic male skating partners. One pair to watch is Vanessa James and Morgan Cipres who are representing France.

Don’t they look cute together?

Vanessa James and Morgan Cipres warm up before practice at Budweiser Gardens in preparation for the 2013 World Figure Skating Championship.

James partnered with Morgan in 2010. Before that, James skated with parners Yannick Bonheur and Hamish Gaman.

Vanessa has lived in quite a few countries. According to her official Sochi Olympics information page:

Born in Canada, she [James] grew up in Bermuda until her family moved to the United States when she was 10 years old. In 2007 she moved to France, and gained French citizenship in 2009. Through her Bermudian father she also holds British citizenship, and represented Great Britain as a singles skater

Twenty-two year old Cipres was a single skater before pairing with James; when not skating he’s a student.

(Hat Tip to BB&W reader Chocolate Fashionista for the alert on Morgan and Cipres.)

Hmmpf………. You see what I did right there? I may have outdone myself this time. You might have thought I was trying to imply something else!? Get your mind out of the gutter, people, this weeks Man Candy Monday inductee is professional surfer Kelly Slater.

Kelly Slater, X Games, surfer, Pearl Jam, daughter, Florida,

Robert Kelly Slater (born February 11, 1972, Cocoa BeachFlorida, US) is an American professional surfer known for his competitive prowess and style. He has been crowned ASP World Tour Champion a record 11 times, including 5 consecutive titles from 1994–98. He is the youngest (at age 20) and the oldest (at age 39) to win the title. Upon winning his 5th world title in 1997, Slater passed Australian surfer Mark Richards to become the most successful champion in the history of the sport. In 2007 he also became the all-time leader in career event wins by winning the Boost Mobile Pro event at Lower Trestles near San Clemente, California.

So those are the details in case you were actually reading so you now know the particulars. He’s an older gent, as you can see from above so let’s take a trip to the past and see what he looked like way back when.

He’s a former Baywatch cast member, and was also the youngest, and is now the oldest person to hold the title of ASP World Tour champion after having dominated the sport for the last two decades.

Kelly Slater, surfer, Australia, X Games, dating, sexy, man, black women, beyond black, white, swirling,

He hold a Master’s degree in Criminal Law from Sydney University, and is a vocal advocate for suicide prevention. He’s appeared in media ads promoting “Athletes Talk” to encourage competitive types to open up about their feelings. Tough people don’t buckle easily but that can also make one think they are supposed to consistently be invincible. I was pleased to find out that he’s empathetic to the feelings of others even though he is quite a type A personality himself.

He’s an 2nd handicapped golfer, a Jiu-Jitsu blue belt and a guitarist who plays with Pearl Jam from time to time.

I can’t swim, so the fact that he can do something I absolutely cannot (EEEK!) makes him all the more sexy to me. I love a man who can teach me news things, and by now you must’ve figured out that I am also very athletic and desire men who move their bodies in unique ways.

I know I can learn to swim, to surf, and then maybe one day, join him and we can do this? Anything is possible, especially when the person you love will make sure you are okay. So then all you have to do is ride the waves, and know that you’ll survive them no matter what comes your way.

Kelly Slater, surfer, X Games, ocean, blue eyes, sexy, dating, black women,

He’s giving me David Beckham and some Jason Statham with a little 007. Maybe that’s just my imagination but I would get lost in his eyes any day. He is the father of a teenage daughter, so us more mature ladies will have to handle this one, since he’s ‘an older man’ for some of you younger bunnies.

Age ain’t nothing but a number, I say, so pardon me for not caring to check the expiration date on this sexy beach bum. Any man that can gaze at me with piercing cats eyes such as these at least deserves a chance to get his feet wet.

Until next time…………

“Chess is a lot like my life,” she says through an interpreter. “If you make smart moves you can stay away from danger, but you know any bad decision could be your last.” says 14 (now 16 year 0ld) Phiona Mutesi.

Black girls and Black women and exploited continents and suffering and potential and life and revelation and determination and human condition and slums and sexual abuse and violence and lack of resources and competition and courtesy and helping hands and mentoring and seeing a person for who they can be instead of who they are.

And don’t you want to know more about the heroine of this amazing life story? Of course you do.

Crothers’ book about her, “The Queen of Katwe,” was published this fall.

“That she’s from Africa makes her an underdog in the world. The fact that she’s from Uganda makes her sort of an underdog in Africa, because it’s one of the poorer countries in Africa. The fact that she’s in Katwe makes her an underdog in Uganda because it’s the most impoverished slum in the entire country. And then to be a girl in Katwe — girls are not treated as equals to the boys,” said Crothers.

“Every hurdle that the world can place in front of her it has placed in front of her.”

The extreme poverty and deprivation in Katwe is hard for many around the world to imagine.

Mutesi wakes at 5 a.m. every morning to “begin a two-hour trek through Katwe to fill a jug with drinkable water, walking through lowland that is often so severely flooded by Uganda’s torrential rains that many residents sleep in hammocks near their ceilings to avoid drowning,” he wrote.

In the country of 34 million people, about one-fourth live below the poverty line, according to the CIA World Factbook. About three-quarters of the men in Uganda are literate; only 58% of women are.

Mutesi said she’s never heard of Idi Amin who governed the country throughout the 1970.

Ugandan teenager Phiona Mutesi is “the ultimate underdog,” her biographer says.

Those who work with her believe she’s 16. But since her birthday is unclear, she might still only be 15, they say.

Her father died when Mutesi was around 3.

“I thought the life I was living, that everyone was living that life,” the teenager said, describing her childhood in Katwe, a slum in the Ugandan capital of Kampala.

“I was living a hard life, where I was sleeping on the streets, and you couldn’t have anything to eat at the streets. So that’s when I decided for my brother to get a cup of porridge.”

Robert Katende, a missionary and refugee of Uganda’s civil war, had started a chess program in Katwe. He offered a bowl of porridge to any child who would show up and learn.

SHE FLIES TO Siberia in late September with nine teammates, all in their 20s, much older than she is. When she won the match that put her on this plane she had no idea what it meant. Nobody had told her what was at stake, so she just played, like always. She had no idea that she’d qualified for the Olympiad; no idea what the Olympiad was. She had no idea that her win would send her to the city of Khanty-Mansiysk, in remote Russia; no idea where Russia was. When she learned all this, she asked just one question: “Is it cold there?”

Imagine how you would feel if you were just going along with the plans of others and then suddenly find yourself on a plane going somewhere you never knew existed.

One of two girls in the room, Phiona is juggling three matches at once and dominating them with her aggressive style, checkmating her young opponents while drawing a flower in the dirt on the floor with her toe. Phiona is 14, and her stone face gives no sign that the next day she will travel to Siberia to compete against the very best chess players in the world.

“Chess is a lot like my life,” she says through an interpreter. “If you make smart moves you can stay away from danger, but you know any bad decision could be your last.” says 14 (now 16 year 0ld) Phiona Mutesi.

This deserves repeating, if you can make smart moves you can stay away from danger, and those in the poorest of human conditions know this to be true, as most poor people across the world do.

It takes much tenacity to rise everyday and have to fight for the most basic needs of your existence, but to then go on and reach for new things that suddenly appear in front of you instead of running back to the dysfunctional existence that you’ve known thus far is the meat and potatoes of any successful launch from adversity.

Sometimes asking a question can gain you an answer.

Sometimes an outreached hand is offering you something of value.

Sometimes what happens next will change what has been happening to you all this time.

Sometimes things change for the best, and unfortunately, and luckily, it’s up to you to make it there.

Find out more: Here, here, here, and here.
