I have some exciting news! Beyond Black & White and Loving Day Destination Retreats are teaming up to present the FIRST weekend destination retreat for our community! But…we need your help! Which place would you rather party…San Diego or Las Vegas?

The perks of San Diego: We have our eyes on Coronado Island, a cute little enclave right across the bridge from downtown San Diego. Coronado Island is home of the historic Hotel Del Coronado and a lovely beach. We also just across the bridge from the Gaslamp District, full of amazing bars and restaurants.

Aerial view of the Coronado island and in the San Diego Bay in Southern California, United States of America. A view of the Skyline of the city, the pacific ocean and the historic Hotel Del Coronado.

Dawn arrives at Coronado Island revealing the bay, golf course, village and coronado bridge.

And Las Vegas…well…it’s Vegas! Gambling, shows, poolside parties, great restaurants, and that big carousel…

A couple weeks ago I visited the spa at Montage, a five-star property in Laguna Hills, California. Sometimes I like to visit the boutique where they sell the products they use in their treatments more  because there’s always something new to obsess about when you’re a natural product junkie like me.

I perused the store, and it’s what you’d expect–$200 plush robes and fancy skin care products you won’t find at Sephora. I saw my favorite staple, Eminence, an amazing organic skin care line imported from Europe. But a new (for me) brand caught my eye–OSEA, a product line that uses seaweed as an ingredient for many of their formulations. I love that the ingredients are non-toxic, vegan, and non-carcinogenic. As important, they work. While I’m not claiming to have tried all their products, the ones that I have are giving me great results.

The Ocean Cleansing Mud was the first standout. It’s aimed for oily to combination and blemish prone skin, and applying it gives you a tingling, stimulating feel from the tea tree, peppermint and rosemary oils it contains.  I tried a sample and loved it, so I came back to purchase a full bottle. I noted the cost–$55. Steep; yes…but not unheard of.

But as obsessive about research and curious about other products as I am, I decided to visit the company website. I discovered that the real retail cost is $44. That’s about a 20% increase on what already a retail markup!! Traditional retail is about 100% over wholesale, so the spa most likely purchased this product for $22 or even less.

Later on, I looked at other products I’d purchased or looked at there…like a body scrub they were charging for $60 which real retail was $48. The Lip and Eye Serum I picked up for $75? The real price is $60.

Now I know this spa is at a fancy resort full of wealthy people, but most of them didn’t get wealthy by paying more for things than they have to.

I called the spa and asked about the discrepancy and they really expressed little defense of the price gouging, and said they charge a premium because you can test the products before you buy and you can get them right when you want them, as opposed to going on the internet (btw OSEA’s shipping is free with a $75 or more purchase).

Let’s see…charge customers 20% or more above the retail price because they get to tinker in your FREE SAMPLES? Yeah…that makes sense. In an age when you can look up a company from your phone and cross check prices instantaneously, it’s an unbelievably cynical and greedy thing to do, and I hope the folks at OSEA know that their products are being exploited in such a way.

The good news is that I discovered an amazing new product that’s worth the share, and my skin loves them. My advice? Go to Montage for the scenery and the food. Have some mojitos by the pool overlooking the Pacific and skip the spa completely.

As I’m learning more and more about Canada, I learning a few things about the social culture there. While interracial dating in Toronto is so common as to not be noticed, there are a few things to consider when interacting with the natives. Canadian men are reserved. They aren’t going to walk up to you and introduce themselves and ask you out to dinner. You’ll have to get your body language game up and maybe learn sign language or something. And don’t think that their reserve is because you’re black. I interviewed several women from Irish to Asian and they all said the same thing. Canadian men generally don’t approach. But trust me you can’t help but stare. There are SO MANY fine men there….OMG…

Because the men here are so reserved, online dating rules the day when it comes to romance. There, under the protection and buffer of the internet, the men come to life. If you’re looking to travel internationally, Canada is the closest and safest bet. Why not combine the experience with a few dates with men you’ve been chatting with online? And if you’re looking to ditch the U.S., the quickest way to do that is get hitched. Just saying…

Tip: Mention you’re a fan of the Blue Jays and you might get a marriage proposal in 2.3 seconds.

InterracialDatingCentral has and thousands and thousands of men registered in Canada. Why not expand your geographical preferences to meet some Canucks? And while paid sites suggests the men signed are really serious about finding a relationship, try out the free sites too.

As I conclude my first trip for our Swirl Around the World travel tour to Toronto, I go home a changed woman. This experience has truly enabled me to grow as a person and refine my message to black women. My only regret is that I waited too long.

At the surface, Canada may seem like “America Junior.” You might think the people and culture are nearly identical because of close proximity to the United States. You would be dead wrong. Here’s a few reasons why you need to book your next vacation to Toronto:

It’s the easiest English-speaking country to travel to.

Toronto is incredibly close. For many in the United States, Canada is just a short train ride away. If you’re looking to cut your teeth on international travel, this trip is easy peasy lemon squeezy. The Canadian dollar is about 25% less than the U.S. dollar, so our money goes further here. Book a flat with Airbnb and you can get a luxury high-rise in the heart of downtown for at a lower price than the adjacent hotels.

It’s extremely safe to travel alone.

For all of it’s hugeness, Toronto is one of the safest cities in the world. While it’s incredibly diverse, people of other cultures live alongside each other in relative harmony. Canada has a world-class travel system that is used by virtually everyone that’s clean and free of roving gangs or aggressive street harassers. Canadian men are reserved and respectful, if not even a bit shy, so you don’t have to worry about getting verbally or physically assaulted if you rebuff anyone’s romantic advances. Check out this feature about the best and worst neighborhoods.

You truly feel free.

Want to take break from “The Struggle?”

While Canada is our closest Western, first world neighbor, it doesn’t have a painful and persistent legacy of enslaving and abusing black people. In fact, runaway slaves headed to Canada via the Underground Railroad to freedom. American blacks expatriated to Canada to escape Jim Crow. The level of suspicion between blacks and whites because of an ugly history doesn’t really exist. When I strolled down Front Street in my vibrant sundress, I knew that the stares I was getting was from admiration. People of all races talk to you. It’s crawling with interracial couples of all combinations, and when a black woman walks down the street holding hands with her non-black partner, no one gives a second look. Now that’s not to say racism doesn’t exist, but as a black woman here, you’re free of the overt, bald prejudice we often receive in America.

True opportunities to date all types of men.

Toronto is the most diverse city in Canada and has the highest rates of interracial unions. If you’re interested in truly dating ALL men (not just white guys) you’ll have a much better chance here. Meet a sexy Hispanic man at a salsa festival, a kind-eyed Middle Eastern man at a pub, a handsome Nordic in the Financial District or Blue Jays game, or a cute and brainy Asian guy strolling bars and clubs down King Street. People of all races and cultures hang out together too, so there’s a great opportunity to make some nice new girlfriends.

Friendly people willing to help.

If you get lost or need help finding something, don’t worry. Ask anyone on the street to lend a hand, and they happily will. There’s a sense that Canadians feel like “we’re all in this together” and reflects in ways they treat their fellow man. While I was attending the Salsa Festival, there was a Japanese man struggling to get some bins full of educational materials up a hill in a narrow cart. One bin full of files spilled over onto the street. One person in my group went to help, but then a group of about five Hispanic kids in their early twenties stopped to join in to help re-stack all bins and make sure they were secure enough for the sidewalk incline. My crew and I looked on in stunned silence. When I commented to one kid about how cool it was to stop and help, he said, “Hey; it’s 2017!”

Indeed it is.

OMG I’m nervous, excited and so busy I can barely think straight, because on Wednesday I’m taking a trip with all of you to Toronto, for the first leg of our “Swirl Around the World” tour! The them is LIVE, WORK, PLAY, and we’ll be living the life of a black woman living abroad, outside of the United States. You’ll be spending virtually every second with me from start to finish, and see some interesting people along the way.

Explore what it might be like to live in Downtown Toronto, and tour the business district. But did you know that you can live in Canada up to six months without actually having to become a citizen? That means people who have online businesses or work remotely can take some extended time getting to know the place and the people, all while enjoying the perks of the U.S. dollar versus the Canadian one.

We’re ECSTATIC to announce that we’ll be meeting adorable IR YouTubers, Beauty & The Bear, and chat with them about what it’s like to live and love as a black woman dating and mating interracially in Canada’s most popular city. Check them out, and be sure to subscribe!

We also are planning a day trip with the bubbly and vivacious “KayLove” who is also married interracially. Check out her vlog on life and dance. She has some amazing energy, so I’m sure I’ll be in a coma after she shows me the sights in Toronto!

And guess who’s going to be helping with all the filming? You might recognize Johnny…who I interviewed for the upcoming (and ever albatrossian) Pros and Cons series. You might not know, Johnny co-owns a film production company and social media marketing agency in Cleveland, Ohio. His business partner is his cousin (who is also joining us), David C. Snyder, and they’ve been making movies since they were 9 and 12 years old. He’s produced 2 feature films, 4 web series, and numerous music videos. His latest venture, SwirlNetwork.TV, is a passion project for his love of interracial dating.

Heeeerrreee’s Johnny!

We’re still working on the “where,” but we’re planning a meet up on Friday. We’ll be sure to keep you posted.

Lastly, I want to thank everyone who has been on this journey with us, and give your encouragement and financial support. This has been a lot of work behind the scenes, but none of this would have happened without you!

Last week I took a road trip up to Monterey, California, a small bedroom town about an hour or so outside of San Francisco. I stayed at the Monterey Plaza Hotel, a gorgeous hotel right on the Pacific coast. I had an AMAZING room right on the ocean, so every night I would hear the waves crashing on the shore and the cool, salty breeze tickling my face. While my trip was mostly business, I had some time to do a little sight-seeing. It started when I saw the couple in the wine tasting bar across the street, the white guy lovingly stroking the arm of a black woman. Then it happened again on my short jaunt to the beach–a young family jostling their biracial child from arm to arm as they slathered him with sun screen. Later that night, an older couple dancing to the live music provided that the hotel’s cocktail hour. We were everywhere. We are legion.

Just think about it…even 15 years ago that many couples of the #BWWM combination would have been unheard of. My…how things are changing.
