Hair

FOLLICLEANSE Might Be One of the Best Conditioners on the Market for Naturals

Anyone with hair higher than 2A worries a little bit on wash day. How much hair will I lose when I finger or comb detangle? How much breakage will be too much? Natural heads know exactly what I’m talkin’ bout.

I’ve used many natural conditioners that have nourished and moisturized, but…the tangles and lack of slip cost me strands. And like a good little product junky, I’m always open indulging cosmetics companies who want to outdo the other guys.

Enter FOLLICLEANSE DS, a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner that might have permanent status in my hair care line up. Both the shampoo and conditioner contain emu oil, jojoba oil and panthenol, rice protein and aloe vera. Before we get to the product, let’s discuss how these ingredients affect the scalp and hair.

DS-Shampoo2

Aloe Vera: Anyone who uses aloe vera as a hair product knows how moisturizing it is and how much it aids in detangling. It also add non-greasy moisture.

Jojoba Oil: Moisturizes; acts similar to the scalp’s natural sebum excretions to lubricate the hair. Helps reduce dryness of both hair and scalp.

Emu Oil: Emu oil is rich Omega fatty acids (3, 6 and 9) Vitamins A and E, linolenic and Oleic acids. Omega 3 acids are fundamental in improving color, hair growth, sheen and elasticity.
It is used primarily for its ability to penetrate the follicle shaft adding moisture to dry, breaking, brittle and damaged hair. Studies are currently being conducted to prove its’ anti-inflammatory properties and is considered excellent for relieving itching, dryness, and flakes.

Rice Proteins: The low molecular weight of rice proteins allows for the proteins to penetrate the hair follicle and reinforce weak spots and reduce mechanical breakage.

Panthenol Oil: A derivative of vitamin B-5, panthenol oil lubricates the entire hair shaft evenly and gives the hair bounce and body and reduces brittleness.

Now for my review.

FOLLICLEANSE SHAMPOO: The fact that this formulation contains SLS may be of concern to some, but I suspect that it doesn’t contain much, because you have to put on a generous amount to get a lather. I know some naturals don’t use shampoo at all and just conditioner wash. Fine for the ladies who live in an area with soft water. But if you live in an area with hard water (containing lots of minerals that can coat and dry your hair) a shampoo that will actually slough off all the oils and deposits on your hair is a must. I for one can’t conditioner wash–so much buildup leaves my fine hair feeling coated and easily broken. When I use FOLLICLEANSE DS shampoo, my know my hair is clean, borderline squeaky–which was a concern for me at first. The smell is wonderful–sort of tropical but not too overpowering and like I mentioned, takes a bit to lather if you have longer hair. This was an issue with both me and Chloe, my 12-year-old with near waist length 3a loosely spiraled curls. This wasn’t an issue when hubby used it or when I tried it on Emma’s hair, which is fine and around 2B.

Update: Four days later, I have to adjust my review of the shampoo a bit. Usually by Day 3, my scalp starts itching and hair starts feeling dirty. Four days in, and my scalp still feels clean.

FOLLICLEANSE CONDITIONER: Now this is where the magic really happened for me. I applied the conditioner and let it sit for an hour while I was doing other things. When I was ready to rinse, I began to detangle with my Quidad shower comb. The comb slid so smoothly through my curls, I couldn’t believe it. Take a look at this video and see for yourself.

I blow dry my hair with a little tension which helps with the styling and reduce the tangles. Dryness is always a concern. But my hair really felt light, bouncy, strong and moisturized.
