Because politics is such soap opera, I thought it’d be a good idea to put a unapologetic liberal and an independent-voting Christian in the same blog post and see what happens. UPDATE: Shuan Brown, a conservative republican, wanted to throw his hat in the ring (see below). So NOW we have a liberal, independent, and a conservative’s point of view. Let the games begin!

Don (liberal):

Great news! Advertisers are either already pulling out or reconsidering their support of right-wing windbag Rush Limbaugh. The final straw appears to have been his calling a third-year Georgetown University Law student, Sandra Fluke, a slut and a whore because she wants insurance coverage for women to afford birth control. And it also looks like the primary force behind this is the use of social media like Facebook, You Tube, and Twitter to mobilize people in protest against this misogynistic nonsense, much like how Glen Beck was forced off the Fox “News” network.

Will this be enough to silence this hateful mouthpiece for the backward-looking “religious” minority in this country? I doubt it very much, because the Internet will still be available to him. But he will be marginalized to a great extent, as less people will be exposed to his rants. And that is a good thing.

Sure, on the Net, he’ll still be able to spew his garbage, and there will still be people who listen to his psuedo-intellectual verbal eruptions. But at least he won’t be able to pollute the airwaves with his filth.

Next up: Take down Bill O’Reilly and Sean Hannity. And before someone shouts “censorship,” if these scumbags are still able to put their brainless droppings out there, then they are not being censored but marginalized, as all hate speech should be.

Christelyn (Independent):

I’ll admit it. I listen to Rush Limbaugh–not because I like him, but because I continue to be disgusted by the verbal excreta that comes out of his mouth. What’s more, I’m truly frightened by how his listeners take his words as the absolute gospel of republican divinity. Don is right, though. Rush stepped in it big time, and it remains to be seen just what will come of several advertisers pulling out because he’s a flame-thrower. But I can’t help but scratch my head a bit that Ms. Fluke, the grad student has garnered so much support while Michelle Obama, the first lady of the United States and frequent target of racist, misogynistic vitriol from (th)Rush has been allowed with little if any economic consequences.

Just more proof of how protected groups get massive support and black women continue to be thrust under the bus.

To be honest, I am not an across-the-board liberal. I love God (but no a Jesus freak), and am seriously considering the purchase of a Glock 26, also known as “baby glock.”

But I’m really REALLY not liking the focus on all these social issues during a time where unemployment and wages are at the forefront of people’s minds, so why the cuss are republicans allowing these crazies dominate the conversation? Is it because they know they can’t win on the economy now that it’s showing signs of a pulse? This whole thing is a clown show.

Shaun (Conservative):

Well, first I’d like to say Rush did say a shocking thing. He called her a slut, and a whore. Why do you think he did that? Well, I listen to Glenn Beck more than Rush, but as anyone would has ever listened to Rush would know, he always …takes it to the next level. I feel that in this example he was showing how absured her stats were. If she in fact spends $3,000 for 3 years in contraception. What does that cover? Lets just say average cost of a condom is $1. At $1,000 a year, that is 3 condoms a day. Birth Control Pill, your looking at $30-$50 a month. Max cost using the pill is $600 a year. What in the world is she spending this much $ on to keep her from having a baby while having sex? If in fact you are using condoms, even if you double-up….that is still 1.5 times a day, every day. If that was the case, I would say you qualify for the term “Slut”. But of course that is the extreme. She So, as far as the Rush comment goes. He took it to the next level, was it “Politically Correct”? No, but that is what I like about him.Now on to her request. Contraception isn’t a right. Sex isn’t a right as well. This is a choice you take to have sex. The only thing that can come from sex is a baby or a STD. This is all something you need to take into account before you go through with this act. It is your own personal responsiblity to protect yourself. If you don’t want a STD or baby, why are you having sex if you can’t afford a condom or birth control pill? You can always not have sex, that is your choice.

As a result, it is not my job or responsilbity to pay for your fun. I’m not getting anything out of it, so why am I (as a tax payer) held on the hook for your sex acts. Now, I’m a conservitive and a Christian. My girlfriend and I are not having sex until marrage. So, we don’t have to worry about contraception. But once we are married, I do not expect anyone to pay for birth control pills or condoms. It is our choice, we have to bare the cost of it.

At the end of the day, if you can’t afford contraception you shouldn’t be having sex unless you want the result of your action. If you can only afford 6 months worth, make those 6 months count. This whole notion of instant gradification no matter if I can afford it or not is why our country is in the shape it is now.

The reason insurance companies pay for Viagra and not birth control pills is Viagra is for a dysfunction. Having  healthy ovaries that function well is not a health problem. Birth control is free at the FREE clinic.

The media is trying to make a lot of noise.. so people will not pay atention to real issues in the upcoming elections.. FYI.. if you talk about your sex life in front a congressional board or in a hearing.. expect people to to talk about it.

Not giving Rush a pass by any means, but Chris is right.  BW are simply the underdogs (underbitches doesn't sound right at all lol).  FL Obama is no exception as though her skin as lovely as it is, is still brown.  Why aren't music corporate heads being boycotted for sponsoring acts/rappers who insist on referring to us as bitches, hoes, and the other names I can't stomach in their ugh, music?  BM have been doing this to us for decades now and nobody is outraged at them.  A few are but  their/our voices aren't heard.  But talk about a ww, it is all over.  My two cents, this is a religious institution.  This 30 year old woman researched Georgetown's student health policy and knew they did not provide contraception.  She went there with the intent of changing policy.  At 30 years old, she is not some naive young, wide eyed, naive helpless little girl.  Birth control is available everywhere.  There are many law schools in DC.  Ms. Fluke did not have to choose a religious based school.  She too has an agenda and Rush fell for it and caused an uproar helping to make this a party issue.  This is a religious rights issue and I for one, hope she loses this battle.  The one trying to force a religious based institution to provide her contraception whatever it is.  Move on and stop trying to trample our religious freedoms in this country.  She can get contraception free from a variety of places that give it with no questions asked.

And black women, when have we seen these white women's groups and politicians so outraged over something that affects us?  Anything? And Anita Hill doesn't count.  Miss Hill did not come forward on her own, she was outed by a ww and the underlying purpose sstill served their issues.  Not ours.

Again, I am in no way giving Rush a pass.  I think he did it for ratings and shock value.  But I sure would like to see boycotts and sponsorships pulled over a black woman getting called a name.  And Dr. Laura doesn't count either.  Her fiasco insulted bm more than bw even though she stepped in it too -- for telling the truth.  It was her manner of telling that truth.  Still waiting for the outrage over something that happens to one of us.

All this talk about women's private business and men wanting to tell women what to do with them! LOL!  Wow! Seriously, someone needs to focus more on the economy then the state of women's wombs.

The City of Wilmington, DE decided to get in on all this reproductive talk, which I find funny, but would be really, really hard to enforce, but here goes:

Wilmington resolution urges 'equal rights' for sperm

March 4, 2012

http://articles.philly.com/2012-03-04/news/31121640_1_resolution-sperm-personhood

The Wilmington City Council has gone on record urging the U.S. and Delaware governments to confer the "rights of personhood" on each and every human sperm.

In a resolution, the council declared: "Laws should be enacted by all legislative bodies in the United States to promote equal representation, and should potentially include laws in defense of 'personhood,' forbidding every man from destroying his semen."

The resolution passed, 8-4, Thursday night.

Loretta Walsh, the councilwoman who introduced the resolution, told the Wilmington News Journal: "What's good for the gander is good for the goose."

There are many ways to look at this issue.

* Women who choose to go to conservative schools take on the responsibility to follow the school's rules. But if they have to may tens to hundreds of thousands of dollars to attend that school, I think they have a right to have those rules benefit them as well. Especially since many women use contraception for reasons other than birth control and its very difficult to differentiate why a woman is using it. And also since we're talking about a post secondary student and her peers, who are more likely to actually have to pay their tuition as well as other expenses on their own, rather than having assistance from their parents. And undergrad still has the option of being under their parents insurance. And even if a graduate student uses the school insurance, that is still something that is calculated within their tuition and other school fees.

* It's understandable that people don't want to pay for other's contraception or their Viagra. But how about how the middle class and lower class having to pay for these bail outs caused by the upper class, the conservatives. The masses can't say boo about that.

* Having sex before marriage does not make one a slut. Just because someone has had sex does not mean they believe in casual sex or multiple partners for the sake of having multiple partners. People do only have sex within serious monograms relationships.

* This may come into the realm of conspiracy and speculation. There is no doubt in my mind that richest conservatives have access to medical care that the layman does not. I'm sure Rush Limbaugh's daughter could get birth control if she wanted, even if her said they did not provide it.

* Many conservatives always want to complain about having to pay for others, but how many of them have been to jail for tax evasion because they don't even pay taxes? Just saying. I have a good handful of conservative friends whose fathers have been in jail for tax evasion at one point or another. It's definitely not uncommon.

Islandgirl 505 pts

I'm going to play devil advocate on this one. Limbaugh is only to make himself out to be a martyr of the 'cause' and make more money in the future painting himself as the poor victim of liberals and feminism. This incident only shows how united a group can make a real impact. The advertisers only care about their bottom line and the galvanising of the people turning to social media to voice their disgust of Limbaugh's latest comments forced the advertisers hands or rather the relevant shareholders to act. All this talk and focus on women's wombs and equating use of contraceptives to promiscuous behaviour is only a smokescreen to distract the public from other pertinent  issues.

And his "apology" shows that he still doesn't get it. Birth control pills are not issued solely for purposes of contraception. "Personal sexual recreational activities" is only ONE of MANY reasons. I dare say if he had not lost so much advertiser support, this limp "apology" would not have been offered.

I dont think it costs 3,000 dollars a year for Birth control Pills though. since she goes to a religious college, she should abide by the rules. I find this comment disgusting. A woman who is being conscious of her body and trying to avoid STDs and unwanted pregnancy is insulted, and subjected to having her sex-life dissected by the amount of protection she has. First off, how is it anyone's business how often she is using her protection?  How does anyone know that she's not in a committed relationship and engaging in a healthy sex life with the man she loves, but is not ready to have children with? She's a "slut", or more elaborately, a dirty, slovenly woman who is sexually promiscuous, and maintains poor sexual morals (that is the definition of that insult, mind you), because she's trying to be responsible and protect herself?

Seriously, it is disgusting that someone would actually COUNT the amount of times she would have to have sex in order to qualify for PROTECTION, and the label her a slut.

In regards to the conservative perspective: If sex isn't a right, and therefore contraceptives aren't a right and should not be covered by health insurance, why don't conservatives take on the health insurance coverage of Viagra and Cialis?

By that logic, that would mean that men have the right to get an erection. Meaning an erection is not a privilege. And being that erections have one sole purpose, that doesn't really line up with the idea that sex is not a right. Or maybe it's a hint that in conservative consciousness, sex is only a right for men, and not for women.

Now, let's define the word "right". A "right" is a power or privilege to which one is justly entitled. It is a just claim to something.

I would think that a woman would have a just claim to the use of her own vagina, and therefore the right to access available healthcare and protection of said vagina. It would seem only fair, since men certainly have just claim to use of their penii, AS WELL AS access to available healthcare and protection of said penii, and in many cases under coverage of a healthcare provider.

Why this conversation is even being had is ridiculous, but this conservative perspective of this conversation just adds more fodder to the idea that conservatives are waging war against women's health, women's reproductive "rights", all the while ignoring what is actually important to the country.  They prefer to have conversations about vaginas.

Last ranty comment, I swear, but since it's been laid out in the format of Liberal, Independent, Conservative, can we just talk about what each of those titles actually mean?

The ideology of conservatism is based in feudalism, landed interest, and ARISTOCRACY.  Aristocratic philosophy is, short form, nobles and aristocrats are superior and rule the world, peasants and commoners are inferior and do what the aristocrats say.  What is the opposite of aristocracy? Um, democracy. I'm not pulling anything out my ass, this is in every political science text book ever written.

The ideology of liberalism is based in liberty (hence the name), protection of individual rights, limited government (believe it or not) natural justice, and society rule.

Ideology of independence, is, well, freedom from committed ideology.

Full disclosure, I'm biased as all hell, as a social liberal, and fiscal progressive, but I think it is worth noting that a titled conservative inherently skews their perspective to one that implies situational superiority over than of the opposing view, just by the definition of the conservative title. Which is why I don't understand why any middle class citizen would support conservative values.

In this specific case, the inherent implication is male sexual superiority. Which, I think, is a running theme among conservative values.

Ok, I'm done.  Sorry to keep diatribing on the conservative view, but, like I said, liberal bias.

Veron Hello! I am Shaun's girlfriend and it may surprise you that Shaun would agree with the idea of not having to pay for Viagra for others. It's crazy that we just spoke about his post on last night and I bought this very thing up to him (before reading your response). Talk about good timing! But regardless he agreed that if we shouldn't pay for contraceptives then we shouldn't pay for men to get erections either. That would be included in the argument that what you want to do in your bedroom is your responsibility. To quote him, if a man wants to get a stiff on then he needs to get his wife.  If that doesn't work then he needs to work that out on his own.  So don't go thinking that every conservative man is out just to advance man. They can be quite consistent on issues.

Rush Limbaugh is a very unhappy angry man full of hate. His face says it all. I wonder if he knows this is bad for his health. He reminds me of the many biblical villians you read about. And yet he wants people to think he is about Godliness. Sad to say, people like Rush will always have followers, those who think like him (the gulliable and haters. How many followers did Jesus have? Like I have said before God does not like ugly and will deal with the evils of this world in his own time. I agree with you on how the first lady has been treated. I have an opinion about Mrs Obama vs Ms. Fluke but will keep this opinion to myself. God's in control.

Rush is an idiot, and he had no business calling her a slut. That said, we all can pay for birth control ourselves. I used condoms for around two decades. They're cheap. Never got a girl pregnant, never got a disease.

Jay from Philly Well...me and The Hubster used condoms and they worked like a charm until we used lamb skin. And TAA-DAA! We now have a two-year-old better know here as "The Babster." I agree. He was out of line and should apologize to her.

But birth control is not that expensive. When I was in college, I got birth control (including condoms) through planned parenthood, which uses a sliding scale fee based on income.  It was very inexpensive. Many of the people who claim that they can't afford birth control of some sort somehow manage to afford the expensive electronics, clothing, cosmetics and whatever else that they want.. Adults who chooses to be sexually active should make birth control a priority and find a way to pay for it themselves.

Jay from Philly Birth control pills are not only for sex. Some women need it for medical conditions like ovarian cysts or irregular periods. Condoms aren't needed every day for health reasons. The Pill IS needed every day for women who have health problems. And there are actually very impoverished people who depend on access to pills for health reasons. I really hate when condoms are compared with birth control hormones. It's not the same!

I didn't realize condoms helped women with ovarian cysts, ovrian and endometrial cancer and dysmenorrhea.

Most women I know who use the pill are  in monogamous relationships, do not want to get pregnant AND do not want to have a period. The others use the pill because they do not want to have a period.

In fact, I don't know any woman who wants to use the pill ONLY because she doesn't want to get pregnant.

@Christelyn Not sure I agree that because someone dates, marries or has sex with a black person that ipso facto makes them not racist. Thomas Jefferson had sex with a black woman but refused to free her or any one if his black off spring until he was dead. He also compared black women to subhumans who enjoyed having sex with apes. Here in NYC a white police officer shoved a broken broomstick into a hatian immigrant's anus yet had a black fiancé. I don't know whether Shaun is a racist or not, but I don't believe that the simple fact that a person dates an individual of another race does not mean that they have nonprejudicial or racist beliefs of members of that race. I dated a white guy who dated only BW, but told me over dinner that black people were unpatriotic and didn't really love this country and only joined the armed forces for the benefits. When I asked him if the white people who joined the armed forces turned the benefits down when they enrolled I got crickets.

PS;  10% of Republicans vote in these primaries. These folks are hardcore, only really voting on sexual issues and anti-poverty, anti-minority issues. Don't ask about war, economy, education (did you hear Santorum's two cents on the liberal indoctrination your kids will get in college--this is why Obama wants them there, not because American kids are behind in EVERY benchmark that matters; science, math, reading, critical thinking, etc.)  And I do feel sorry for Mitt Romney. Here's where all this stifling and silencing of people leads you.  http://youtu.be/0atCbotGmKk  It's short, silent [no annoying foreign languages] and to the point.  Happy marching children striving ever resolutely to overcome the forces of Classism, Poverty-mongering, Racism, Fascism, Split-ism through the power of one mind, one ideal, one opinion in total loving obedience to the Great Leader.....

That Great Leader thing got me thinking.  Ya know, like in a lot of things, the Chinese are kind of Best in Group.  Why not go for Best in Show?  Let's see, how's that work?  Great Leader, Dear Leader and whatever obscenely fat grandson is calling himself this week.  No income dis-proportionality, free health care, free education through college, even grad school, not a lot of obesity problems, except for The Dear Him of Kim, happy dancing people, at Arirang at least, IDK the rest of the time, no annoying contrary opinions or beliefs stated publicly, at least not for long, no racism and total solidarity with the oppressed peoples of the world in their struggle against the forces of blah, blah, blah.  You could go there, they'd find you a job.  Maybe not the one you want, but it's free from dissent and dissenters.  Everyone will agree with you, as long as you agree with Them.  They loves them some happy tunes, I've even ripped one you can sing when you get there.  "Springtime for Pyongyang and Kim Jong Un, Winter for Tokyo and Seoul"  yada yada "Don't be stupid, be a smarty, Join the Korean Workers Party!"

You see, we sneaky little people actually talk to each other very quietly, as befits our status as 'model minorities'.  I actually know four former Norks, which is probably four more than you know.  But, what do I know?

Surprised I didn't play the Hitler card?  Oh, please that's so mid-20th century.  Besides, White/Black America lacks the self-discipline and organizational skills to pull that one off.  Too many sports fans and fake reality show watchers.

First things first, Chris.  I am not an atheist.  I just have a different perspective than church people have, regardless of religion:

http://donricejr.blogspot.com/2012/02/on-personal-growth-part-one.html

Now on to the main topic:  Rush Limbaugh.

I, too, listen to Rush, albeit in VERY small doses, like the little clips posted on progressive websites and blogs.  Any more than those tiny doses tends to turn my stomach.

I fully agree with your take on the issue regarding Ms. Fluke and Mrs. Obama.  The fact that there has been and continues to be two different response memes to derogatory speech toward white women and black women is unconscionable and must be stopped.  And that, really, is the point of your blog site: Beyond Black and White.  The only way I see to combat this is through education.  And such education must be focussed on countering the destructive attitudes of those who follow the likes of Rush, Bachman, Coulter, and O'Reilly, to name a few.

As I said elsewhere on BB&W, if we can't reach and teach the adults, then we must teach the children, by enlisting the churches, synagogues, temples, community centers, and especially the schools, which are under a barrage of attacks from the political far right.

I've seen, many times in my life, little children playing together, with no awareness of differences with regard to race, culture, or religion; they're just children playing.  And whenever I see or think about this, I'm reminded of the scene in the Whoopie Goldberg movie Corinna, Corinna" of the children in church, where the little white girl smiles and says, "I'm a n***** lover!"  And the little chubby black boy quietly goes off on her for a moment.  Then, just as suddenly, they're all friends again.  Because children DO NOT UNDERSTAND blind hatred and prejudice.  Hell, I'm grown, and *I* don't understand it, in spite of having been raised among bigots.

NATruthstudent It would've been very cool had the president called Rush and told him to ease up on his wife, too. i did like how he called that student to applaud her efforts. She isn't in the political realm so it is extra-smelly to attack a private citizen for trying to speak her mind. And Fox website asked if this woman was a "Fame-Seeking Activist" which is appalling considering Rush is the one who thrust her in the spotlight even further.

I agree, Lili.  But I could just imagine the rant Rush would have gone off on if President Obama HAD called him like that.  And Rush doesn't really give a hoot who he pisses off in his rants.  Although that may change just a bit when he's called on the carpet for losing advertisers.

Plus, I wouldn't put it past Fox to make wild accusations and even wilder innuendos; that's their modus operendi.

@Lili2009 @NATruthstudent I think President Obama made the right choice by not calling Rush out on his attacks on his wife Michelle. He did ask the haters to leave his wife (family) alone before, during his campaign. Many times it is wise, not to argue with foolish people. This is what Rush wants, to provoke Obama. Besides the president has bigger fires to put out and must stay the course and be focused. Can you imagine how mentally frustrating and stressful this can be? To be upset and sweat over ignorant stuff? If I were the First Lady I would tell the president to just ignore it. Which she, Michelle probably has already done. Rush Limbaugh is about hate and he will be destroyed by it.
