Hostess Commentary: Why this Blog Rocks the Bells

You won’t often find me bragging about my own awesomeness in creating this site–in fact, you won’t find me discussing it at all. Why? Because I really don’t have much to do in making it great. It’s the commenters.

It’s you.

If I can take credit for anything, it’d be that I know my limitations. So many blogs (okay, mostly all) come from a position that its host knows everything, and that all the little minions come everyday to worship at their words. But here’s the problem with that: If you KNOW everything, how the hay-ell can you ever be wrong? And then if someone challenges, you have to reduce yourself to your douchiest just to maintain face.  So…why not come out of the gate and just admit you don’t have all the answers, and allow people who are smarter than you help create a think tank, a forum, a blog-turned-discussion board?

chyeah.

But aside from being irreverent, snarky, typo-pocked, smart-arssed and sometimes genuinely witty, I’m just window dressing. YOU GUYS MAKE IT HAPPEN. Do not think I know better.

(I know I’m missing somebody(s), so just give me a break and blame it on the vodka.)

You do. And I’m all for folks speaking their minds–whether it’s cogent and cerebral or ridiculously trollish, it’s all on display, and you are helping countless lurkers to decide…better.

Here’s to 1.5 years, 4,086 fans, and a quarter of a million hits each month. They come here for you, me, and we. We kick tail together.

Long live black girls with brains. Long live rainbeau dudes with brains.

This is not a forum. This is not a blog. It’s a F.L.O.G.

Why Chris! I had no idea that your flog was so young. I'd been wondering why I hadn't heard of it before. Thanks so much for the acknowledgement. I'm proud to be apart of this forum community. I've learned so much from all of you guys. Let's keep it rolling.

This is one of the greatest places I've come to online. I don't always get to post as much as I'd like (family life + school = super busy), but I always stop in to read, and I'm super grateful for the opportunity Chris gave me (and hubby) to be featured on the blog to hopefully teach women something.

Keep up the fabulous work lady!

Thanks guys, for all your well wishes. I really do value the community here, and I'll stick to my story--you guys make the blog. Maintaining it, however, is something I work like a job, because I really, really want it to be, so...be nice to the advertisers. ;-)

absolutely... we must support those who support us!!

Many thanks to you, Chirs for your graciousness as a hostess and for allowing for the free exchange of ideas and opinions here. It's a pleasure to read and comet here. Please keep up the fabulous work!!

Congratulations!
One thing you really deserve credit for is being consistent, Chris. So many blogs just flounder and die because their creators stop posting, but you update regularly and always have interesting subjects to talk about.

Aw, thanks for the shout-out!

And yes, what a great blog. I admire the fact that you are so prolific and disciplined in producing these essays DAILY.

Christelyn,

You are funny, insightful and tough. You allow trolls on occasionally, but pretty much run a tight ship. You are a must-read addiction.

All the best in the future!

Congratulations!

I love it when a girl gets ahead :)

Heck I even made the list even if some people don't want me here! Cool!

Congrats Chris,

I didn't know you had only been on here for such a short time. You do an amazing job and are a PROLIFIC writer; don't know how you do it. :) I;ve enjoyed your posts but you're right I think I like the comments best of all. It's so neat to get the different perspectives from women. I enjoyed the positivity and look forward to your next Blog milestone! Keep up the good work.

Hey Chris,

Many Congrats to a successful blog I know I comment here and there but I mostly comment on the CW's Facebook "Black Women Deserve Better" page under my name lavette so thanks for letting be a part of this online community.

Thanks to Christelyn and all the regulars. I have been a perpetually lurker for about 6 months now and you all have helped me articulate my ideas by sharing your points of view. You all say things so well and you inspire to continue to define what is best for ME and damn what others think!

*high fives* to you all from So Cal and where ever the wind takes me in the future.

Christalyn Congratulations!

You are a fine example of a beautiful woman who is intelligent, humble, and mixed with a bit of cayenne pepper for favor.

Congrats!!!

You deserve wider exposure and 1 million visitors!!!

I wish Neecy would visit again, too. And Black Queen Bee. And several others that were here in the first six-twelve months quite a bit, and then sort of dropped off the map. Their input and knowledge was invaluable to me personally. There is no subtext here of saying they were better than the current group; I'm merely saying it would have been great to keep everyone in the fold, that's all. The current folks are great, too.

IA, I am rereading old posts (to catch up on things I've missed) and I do see persons with awesome input that aren't regulars at present.

But I guess people have busy lives or their endeavors take them other places. Hopefully they'll pop back in some time in the future.

If not, at least their words of wisdom are preserved indefinitely. :)

I also agree.

I miss those two, plus:

Hodan
Ali
Rainebeaux
Niki
Lafemmenoir
Kaikou
blackgirlinmaine
Jen Pahssen
lifebehindthewall
Elaine
Sharon
Zoopath

And some others I can't remember right now. Even though I disagreed with some of these women sometimes, it was great discussing things with them. And, you know, I have to say, sometimes their point of view made enough sense so that they changed my opinion on something.

A lot of these women made this blog what it is today by commenting frequently in the early months. And what they wrote moved me from being a lurker on here from Day 1 to actively participating in this social forum for black women. So I thank all of them for that.

SIGH

Luna, not Luan. . .

@Pam, Neecy now has her own blog.

Really?! What's the link?

FYI for all on the list, I'm working on giving all of your a little something special to show how much I appreciate you. Give me time; this is a HUGE undertaking.

Awww...you're the best Christelyn! I love this blog! It's such an honor to hang out here amongst such beautiful and intelligent ladies (and guys!).

Thanks for the shout out Christelyn. Like I said in my other post, I view you and the other BWE bloggers as modern-day Harriet Tubmans, and this is OUR Underground Railroad.

Thanks for the inclusion!

I think you have more credit due than you'll admit. Most blogs post content as a lecture. Every notion is delivered as a [test of HTML tags] fait accompli straight from the godhead.

Yours is different, very different. You pose topics as a springboard for intelligent, cogent discussion. Viewpoints are welcomed and a safe, caring space for discourse results.

Off topic, sort of, but I hope Ricky T continues to appear. He represents someone who is not 34 going on 85 and available. The ladies who fancy him should decamp to DC and hunt him down. Methinks he's not going to be unattached for very long!

我大家招呼。[that's a response to the French from Brenda55; means the same thing.]

Hey Wanxi, Ricky T is here to stay (he's my IRL friend too) but he's taken by a very, very lucky girl. ;-)

*high-fives Ricky T's lucky lady*

That's gonna break some hearts!

You know what's odd is when I first noticed him, I simply thought YOU had changed your posting name. XD

Oh, no, no, no! Ricky T. is young, hot, personable, has no accent, goes lots of places and does interesting things.

I, OTOH; none of the above. WorkSchoolHome, WorkSchoolHome, WorkSchoolHome, WorkSchoolHome, WorkSchoolHome, WorkSchoolHome, WorkSchoolHome is my normal week with one weekend a month of Reserve Duty.

I've been told by over 150 Taiwanese [including my sisters who now live there] that I'm an all-around dead ringer for this bloke, the moderator: http://youtu.be/LKndEFMBNdY

Don't watch more than a minute of it. If you don't speak Mandarin or read Traditional Chinese Characters, it's pointless and will make you nuts after a while.

Well, I guess this means you can look forward to being mobbed for autographs should you choose to visit. :D

Awwwww I feel loved :) I love this blog family and everyone in it :)
Let's rock into this coming year with knowledge and fun :)
XOXO

Thanks Christelyn for your positive role in creating this website. "Somebodies got to do it". And you are the somebody. Trying to make a better world and bringing into our lives something we would not otherwise be able to share and have our eyes opened to the facts of life for the BW. I say to you stay
strong as you area blessed to have such talent to come up with
this site. And there are others out there as well. Job well done wish you millions more of fans and hits. And you were humble enough
to include our names.

We love you too Chris! I personally have a lot of love for all the ladies here on this blog. I love the trolls too. They give me some mental exercise and they basically help the movement along unbeknownst to them. :) Just keep going, changing, evolving, and spreading the message and we'll be here. Thanks!!!!

Love all of you, especially Christelyn. I've learned a lot about black women by reading these comments. As a white man who prefers black woman, I need to know these things. There are still some mysteries left-----but maybe that's a good thing. I like mysteries, especially when they're female.

A Friend? Like Superman?? (sorry, got sidetracked by his name. Christopher Reeve had me watching movies with no basic plot just to look at his black hair and blue eyes)

Christelyn, gurl, gurl. I started on my BWE journey about 3 yrs ago when I stumbled across Khadijah's blog. Then I found Black Women Blow the Trumpet, were Lisa used the TOUGH love approach. Then I got to Evia, who broke stuff down so bad, it's still over there broken! Now through links and clicks I am over here. Daily even, because you set up these posts like nobody's business. And I gots to know the LATEST in BWE world. I use what's applicable and I try to be the example in my own little corner of the world. Bit by bit, that's how you eat an elephant. Thanks for the daily tidbits. You are a success and a role model for how to live life in these strange times we've found ourselves in the midst of. Keep looking up, Everyone!

Sorry to insert a quick slang lesson. But from my school, of old, bad meant good. I don't want to give the impression Evia was bad (meaning bad)as a blogger. Quite the contrary. Good ol' common sense is what she specializing in teaching. (cuz it ain't so common.) Carry on!

Hmmm, mysteries? Such as? LOL, Enquiring minds wants to know.

Enquiring minds wants to know what type of mysteries?

Love this blog!
Thank you Christelyn for allowing us foreign black gals to comment here, I really appreciate that and I enjoy reading the comments as well because I learn so much from everyone.

Chris,
Giving you my deepest and most graceful cotillion curtsy from one lady to another. Thank-you for this oasis of sanity where people can safely express thoughts and ideas freely and respectfully.

It cannot be easy to hold the trolls at bay but you manage thus keeping these discussions on track and meaningful. While I really like the think tank image I see this more like a Salon, in Paris no less, where a group of intelligent people get together to debate ideas for the sheer joy of it.

I also want to thank my fellow participants on this blog. These have been some of the most stimulating conversations I nave had the pleasure of having on line. You all rock. I'd gladly hang out with each one of you, dressed to the nines, wine glass in hand as we discuss meaning full topics with grace and wit.
Je vous salue tous.

Mmmmm, now that sounds good!!!

No, thank YOU Chris!!! God bless your ministry, because that’s exactly what I see it as. I had been out of the matrix for a while but this blog was definitely instrumental in affirming for me that I wasn’t crazy for embracing my options and continuing to be resolute in my standards. At a macro level, over the last year, I have seen a HUGE change in attitudes by BW toward dating out. Just last week, I was meeting with my mentee’s mom and she asked me about dating, then proceeded to say, “Well, are you keeping your options open? A lot of times black women are only interested in black men but….” Ha!

I think the Banks book was the tipping point. So I thank you Chris and the many others who are fighting to ensure black women are aware of what they deserve, and most importantly, what they CAN have.
:)

But yes, I love this blog!

BUNNY! How could I forget? Oh yeah. the vodka. off to update...

Bunny77, I like how you did that. Just a simple Ahem.... That's style.

;) at Brenda55... and at Chris, dang, a sista has a busy week and everyone forgets about her! Sob!

Just kidding. :) Thanks for the add.

To chime in with everyone else, thank you for all the work you do with this blog. The discussion topics are excellent and the amount of time you put into it (while raising four kids and taking care of a hubby and household... yikes) is much appreciated. I don't know how you do it, but you make this blog a daily must-read and I keep coming back for more!

I also love all of the e-friends I've made here, and I can't wait to meet y'all in real life. And I have met you in person Chris, and it was so cool to be able to do that.

I hope this is the beginning of wonderful lifelong friendships with a group of great women living well and enjoying life, love and happiness with some wonderful mates!
