How I started with the bagpipes: When I was eight years old, my parents took me to see the Chieftains play at the Meyerhoff Symphony Hall. I fell in love with their music, and originally wanted to learn how to play the uilleann pipes (Irish bellows-blown pipe). However, they are rather expensive, and nobody provides local instruction for them. So instead, my parents got me started on the Great Highland Bagpipes, and I’ve been playing them on and off since I was ten years old. I’ve got a year left of school until I graduate, so my challenge is to see if I can make a comfortable living playing the bagpipes. If not, I still have a marketable skill to make some extra cash on the side once I find my career.
