Wow, Christmas creeps up on me every year. It's December 25 all the time; why do I get surprised when it's so close?
I know that everyone likes plastic stuff pressed out in 中國, but there are other gifts, better ones. Ones that last for more than a couple of hours and don't end up clogging a landfill.
Actually, the best gift at Christmas is your continuing loving presence in their lives. Every Christmas with me is odd, as I get all my small amount of Tagalog back because my Filipino friends in school got me through many Christmases away from PV and my family. So, let's have Christmas in the Philippines from Coca-Cola (Phils)! It's all a happy ending upbeat sort of thing. Possible side effect: may cause excessive lacrimation. May interfere with reading subtitles. Take appropriate precautions.

OFW's; you see them everywhere, all around the world. They work, often in hospitals, in your town. You see them; they're shy, but they smile genuine smiles when they're helping you. You see them, you talk a little with them, dealing with their accents, then you go home and sort of forget them. Well, here they are, at Christmas, their biggest holiday of the year. Merry Christmas, OFW around the world. Balikbayan sa Pasko susunod na taon? I hope that's close; never really got the hang of Tagalog, but I tried.
Law Wanxi "Excessive lacrimation" indeed! Makes me want to go out and buy a Coke. Hearing the Tagalog brings back memories.
Karla Common story in line officers from back in the day; some Filipino chief helped them as an O-1 become a better officer and learn the job AND give them a leg up on the politics.
Law Wanxi So true. My Filipino MMCM Sea Daddy was the best. This guy knew everything about the Navy and then some. If it hadn't been for him, I would have ended my Navy stint at four years instead of going on and making it a career. He taught me how to cook Chicken Adobo and Pansit, which, if I do say so myself, has garnered tons of compliments over the years.

nice. so what if i'm easily manipulated? ha

I guess I'm pretty easy too. I can't really watch that vid with the sound on. Listening to Leonie's cry/laugh/cry words is just a bit much. It's an OK translation in the subtitles, fairly bland. The idiomatic stuff in the audio just rips one's heart out.

How wonderful as family is so important. Merrry Christmas!
Well we our brood of nieces and nephews pjs and books, dang children's books cost me 100 bucks. We got 7 under the age of 18 and 8 over the age of 18 only the ones under 18 get a gift. The ones need to be giving us gifts LOL. But pjs and books works out great and two teenagers get gift cards. I got books this year w/ theme of Seattle so all the stories take place here. I thought that was cool.
Since I live 8hrs from my nieces :( They get whatever they want for me. My youngest niece wanted an Inkoos pink bear. Ugliest thing I ever seen. Apparently, it's hard to find because I looked everywhere for it. I finally had to bit the bullet and go to Amazon. I realize that I was financially assaulted, knew that as I was tying in my credit card #, but it's all worth it to hear her little voice saying "Thank you Auntie Christie for my present" I almost make me want to cry.
I've bought most simulating and educational toys for my kids. I managed for find a brown doll in store for the girl.
Hubby bought a hand crafted doll house for the girl, but we are not going to give it to her yet. She's in the destroy toys face and I think she will appreciate it more in a year or so. Hubby is really excited about the doll house since it's not mass produced, but actually craftsmanship. He likes wooden toys and old style toys for the kids. Lots of quaint little stores here in Europe who sells stuff like that.
Hubby is getting me a mink coat from Birger Christensen in Copenhagen, Very nice.
I've bought him a bunch of video games. TBH, I wasn't sure of what to buy him.

Thanks!

Must be nice. The mink coat that us:D
Nkosazana I was trying to type "The mink coat that is":D
reem11 Oh it's very nice, Me and my niece went over there a week ago and took a look and had one put away for when hubby went and picked it up. That grey/white fur goes very well with my dark skin. Jealousy of the other African women here is going to go up by 300% lol.

I love handmade wooden toys too, they have an antique look plus they are usually better made hence longer lasting than the 'plasticky' ones:)
I got my kids a wooden handcrafted skittles set a couple of years ago which is lovely and quaint looking and so far resisted all their rough play. Also a london doubledecker red bus from habitat complete with little wooden handpainted 'passengers'. Too adorable. Quite inexpensive too - I got it from Habitat, a UK store. They have unique stuff (furniture, accesories, art etc) but sadly are on the verge of folding in this economy.

contd...
Anyway for this xmas I have bought a globe, boardgames and loads of books for my 10 year old who has suddenly discovered Harry Potter & Enid Blyton. We are slowly building a collection of Tintin and Asterix books as well; I loved these as a child and wish my mum had helped us save them..*sigh*. Oh well, I am guarding these ones well I can tell you, lol! Full disclosure- I have also bought a few brightly coloured plastic toys for the kids! (I have 2 girls)
Regarding the jealous African women, I am not condoning jealousy but maybe a little sympathy would be good. Many people are lonely or in bad marriages. It's easy to say well just leave but in reality things are more complex... They probably wish they too had a solid, loving union..
DidiONkosazanareem11 plus one for the wooden toys..love em.
I remember Habitat in paris everyone called it ' AH bEE Tah" hahah
DidiONkosazanareem11 i like the globe idea too..hmm.

Girl, you have no idea of how bitchy these women can be. When I first got here, I was all alone. Unless I wanted to hang out with white SAs. Skin colour =/= connection and friendship.
It's gotten worst now when I got myself a real man. Women can be very jealous.
Thanks for the review. I've been trying, desperately, to find a gift for my 2 year old great-nephew. The kid has everything...
When I was a small child, if someone warm and kindly slid 2 - 3 large into a red/green envelope and handed it to me, I would have been all smiles and the giver would have looked 10+ good to me.
Or more Legos; can't have too many Legos! Four of the huge bulk brick sets will run you about two bills, to carry the above nomenclature forward.
Law Wanxi I'm still a major Lego fan; got a Frank Lloyd Wright house to build for Christmas. I must admit, however, that, as a kid, when I saw the Christmas/Birthday card shaped like a wallet with some green in it, my eyes lit up brighter than the sun. Since I was a military brat, my relatives sent the easiest gift, which was very lucrative for me. As an adult, I still like it.
Karla Best thing about money is that no matter what size, it'll never be too large!
Law Wanxi My dear departed grandmother Essie used to say it is the perfect size, the perfect color and everyone loves it, no matter who they are.
KarlaLaw Wanxi I still love Lego...............

This year my son wanted the Skylanders Spyro's Adventure video game and numerous little figures that you buy separately that you place on the portal (included w/game) that transport the characters into the game to access the different areas and abilities. The starter set for the game is $60 @ Target, and you can get 3 character expansion packs for $20 each, or single character packs for $8 each. Did I mention that there over 30+ of figures to collect?
We dropped $200 on the game and 4 of the 3 character packs, bought everything on Thanksgiving Day online from the warmth and comfort of home, so I have been relaxed the entire time. The gifts are wrapped and hidden where he can't find them until he wakes up Christmas morning to see if Santa Claus decided he was a good boy this year and brought him anything from his always growing Christmas list.
My hubby being a gamer I got him the video game and strategy guide that he wanted. No clue what he got me for this year, but nothing tops my Kindle 2 he got me last Christmas.
this year I desperately tired to steer away from the plastic kit(that'll we'll have to step over or on) this year: children's books & dvds about anatomy, money, science...watches, spirographs, gardening kits.
can't say they've been totally thrilled so far but I'll let the grandparents supply the foolishness. lol!
