Mermaid Eyes for the Brown Girl

Everyone on Pinterest and Instagram is all over the mermaid look, because make up companies can come up with a dreamy, aquamarine shade that looks like the gills of…well…a mermaid.

And while these shades can stand alone, it’s fun to see how you can combine to make a really tight, finished look. It’s easier than you think.

In the following pictorial, I use only two base colors–Urban Decay LOUNGE (this color is currently only available in the SEPHORA Favorites Superstars gift set ($75) but totally worth it), and Jane Iredale’s RUBY (not made anymore, but it’s basically a brick red).

PREP: Use a eyeshadow primer and draw in your brows. This helps frame your face. It’s a small thing, but it makes a world of difference.

STEP ONE: Apply LOUNGE along the orbit of the eye (the largest, fattest and roundest part of the eye) until you have applied enough to your satisfaction. I wet the brush first because I like for it to really show up.

STEP TWO: Apply the brick red shadow to the inner lid and along the upper, unlovable portion of the lid and blend the red ONLY. Leave the blue be.

STEP THREE: Highlight right under your eyebrow with concealer and blend it in.

STEP FOUR & FIVE: Line your upper and lower lids with black eyeliner, and wing it out if you like that look. Use a really good mascara to bring out your lashes. I like They’re Real by Benefit Cosmetics.
