Product Pick: At Last, a Bra that Makes Me Think Twice About Protesting Against Bras!

I mostly go braless–I’ve admitted as much on this blog several times. I’ve thought of
burning all my bras out of protest, but not for political reasons. I’d be protesting the fact
that ever since I was old enough to legitimately wear mammary support, I can count on
my fingers how many bras have actually been comfortable enough for me to want to
wear once I shed out of my suitable-to-be-seen-in-without-being-mistaken-as-a-hobo
wardrobe. But it wasn’t for lack of trying. I’ve bought cheap and expensive, and my
lingerie drawers are a brassiere graveyard and a testament that hope springs eternal.
If the bra is not too tight, then it’s a wire problem–mostly stemming from said wire
stabbing me in the upper ribs after one or two washes. If it’s not the stabbing, it’s the
obvious falseness of push-up action which ends up making me look like I’ve stuffed one
too many tissues inside and I’m not fooling anyone with my wanna-be-Jessica-Rabbit-
looking self. And after four kids and countless hours, days, and years breastfeeding, it’s
not like I don’t need a bra, if only for decorative purposes. I waffled back and forth about
getting a boob job, but since my neighbor paid $20,000 for one plus a tummy-tuck and
then has spent months with a bag attached to her to drain blood and puss after her
body rejected the stitches, I’ve had…uh…some second thoughts about that. Plus, my
outstanding $20,000 in school loans need waaay more attention than my boobs do.

So when I was asked to review the Lily of France line of boobage support, I agreed, but
was thinking I’d need to eventually hold yet another funeral for another failed bra. But
since surgery is now out of the question, I thought I’d give this bra thing one last Hail
Mary. First thing, I made sure the apparatus actually fit, which is, apparently integral to
bra-sporting success. From the Lily of France site:

Step 1: around bust
Measure the fullest point around the bust. Donít pull the tape measure too tight. Round
up to the closest half inch.

Step 2: under bust
Pulling firmly on the tape, measure under the bust. Keep the tape measure flat and
even around your body.

Enter those two measurements and enter them into the handy-dandy calculator and
viola! Thatís your bra size.

I put their product through rigorous testing, because the company claims the comfort
and support is their aim. My test? I wore them all day–and slept in them all night. Final
verdict? No bra funeral needed.
