Back To School…Then and Now…

Do you remember when all you needed for school was a backpack, notebook, Number Two pencil and a ream of paper and you were all set for school? Gah, those were the days I kinda miss, when teachers didn’t have to spend their hard-earned cash on supplies, and every school had a music and physical education program. Now when it’s time for my four kids to get back to school, I get a teacher wish list as long as the Dead Sea Scrolls. But some things have turned out for the better, like the computer rooms. When I was in middle school, it was just about the time when Macintosh made the scene, and those four computers with the ethereal green text minus any Windows whatsoever was about the coolest thing I’d ever seen. I was trying to figure out how I could program the thing to do my homework, or create a perfect facsimile of Michael Jackson, you know, just like in the movie, “Weird Science.” I’m still mad I didn’t figure that out. Now the computer rooms are far out of the novelty stages and my kid’s room has about 20 computers, updated with the latest software courtesy of an active and tenacious PTA. And now the next step might be tablets or laptops in grade-school book bags, and I’ll admit I’m a little jelly that I had to write all my papers with those Number Twos and nurse all those callouses and blisters. Now, students think that a desktop, laptop or tablet is a must-have for back-to-school, and 81% of their parents think that it is important for their child to have a laptop to be successful (93% also think computer software is important!) according to a Microsoft technology and education survey. And while kids today all hand-write like drunken doctors, they’re whizzes in texting and typing. Maxi Me goes into the 10th grade with stuff due in her AP classes before school even starts. Goody for her, because we just updated our software on our two-year-old jalopy of a computer with NEW Office 365 Home Premium, which has Word, Excel, OneNote, PowerPoint and more. Now all I have to do is wait until laptops and tablets cost as much as a ream of lined paper. Think that might happen? IMG_0901
