Terry O’Quinn and Vanessa Williams Make Devilish (But Boring) Swirl Couple in “666 Park Avenue”

The interracial marriage in this show is just “meh” for me compared to the overall storyline.

Through bleary eyes, I caught the premiere of “666 Park Avenue,” and I must say I’m quite intrigued. The fact that the lead villains, Terry O’Quinn and Vanessa Williams are swirling marrieds is an afterthought. The New York Times did a piece bemoaning how the new crop of white me/black women pairings were “weird” and should quickly run their course. I disagree. The more we see it, the more normal it becomes to people who just can’t seem to fathom the concept of interracial love that doesn’t include prostitution, slavery or exploitation. In any case, I felt no chemistry between O’Quinn and Williams, and think their more partners in evil than anything else. I’m more intrigued by the unsuspecting couple, “Jane and Henry,” who take the too-good-to-be-true apartment management job in the swanky place.

I LOVE the concept of conspirators of evil living communally in an old place seemingly rich with history (cue The Shining, Rosemary’s Baby, etc, etc.). I’m a sucker for horrors, thrillers and all things macabre.

In the first show we see a man who kills to bring back his dead wife, a man tempted by a woman he sees undressing in a window and then his wife squeezed and crushed in an elevator door, Olivia (played by Vanessa Williams) pushing a $400 dress on Jane for black tie affair. At the end Jane and Henry sign a contract the could very well have been a trade for their very souls.

Who caught it? Thoughts?

So far I love the sow and all it's characters. I too thought how viewers were going to take the interracial couple. Yes! as I watched the last couple episodes V. Williams and T. O'Quinn do remind me of more partners in evil crime than an actual couple. The last episode was so good when her and her husband pulled a fast one on the guy who was trying to get V. Williams to turn against her husband. NICE!

ummm it was a $4000 not $400. i don't care who vanessa is with...she will be mine...oh yes....she will be mine!! lol. That sista is timeless. And no it has nothing to do with how lighter than other sisters she is...she is fine. period. I've had a thing for her for over 20 years that just won't go away..lol.

Vanessa Williams is DA BOMB!  I saw her twice in Vegas, and lemme tell ya, the woman is GORGEOUS, can sing and dance and looks killer in a ball gown.  As to TV . . . meh!  Hardly ever watch it.  But for a lady who can make you jump up and down in a live venue, she is the one!

I didn't see this show (no American TV here) but your synopsis sounds similar to  Devils' Advocate with Pachino, Reeves & Theron. Love that movie.

DeepWater 2464 pts

LadyLittlefoot   You are so right about that, I knew this show reminded me of movie that I couldn't remember the name of and, yeah, it would be "The Devils Advocate" with Charlize Theron, Al Pacino and Keanu Reeves, just with a bit of a slightly different twist.

I took the NYT article to find an important take on how bw/wm couples are portrayed, not that those relationships in and of themselves are wierd and suspect, but that the programming chose to present them as evil, wierd and suspect, that is what made the writer suspicious.

KTW 56 pts

pioneervalleywoman Yeah, I agree with this. The writer was saying that the BW/WM relationships on TV are portrayed as strange (the couples that he profiled are aliens, criminals, and a married man/mistress), not that they're inherently strange. I would prefer to see a "Brothers and Sisters"-style drama about a large, blended interracial family.

pioneervalleywoman That's how I read it too.

So uh. New York times thinks it's weird eh? SUCK IT!

I love horror/science fiction/fantasy so having Vanessa Williams & Terry O'Quinn play a swirling couple is an added and happy bonus. The first episode did move slowly but I think that's because it was setting up the action for future storylines. Vanessa played the typical "uber rich wife" stereotype to the hilt (e.g., buying the "help" a $4000 designer gown). She mysteriously mentioned her daughter so I wonder what happened there. Also, although her husband appears to be "the Devil" I wouldn' t be surprised if Vanessa turns out to be the power behind the throne. . I'm intrigued and look forward to next week's episode.

DeepWater 2464 pts

Lady Arabella Victoria   And "The Drake"  (I believe to be "The Dakota" on 77th and Central Park West in Manhattan NY) has that mosaic tile work in the basement that the artist dudes' wife wound down the hallway stairs to holds some clue to the buildings' and original owners/tenants origins.   When the new resident manager, the new blond girl goes down to basement (after chasing a hand and arm winding down the stairwell further and further to basement) and pulls out ladder from some dark corner to fix laundry/washer light and with every outage of light appears closer and closer, unbeknownst to main blond character, obviously has something to do with building and its current ownership.   Hopefully it will get better, otherwise it will be in the "good ideas gone wrong" heap with the other new shows that have come (and soon to be) and gone list.

I made a point to watch it. I'd love to see more scenes with the two of them together to really get a sense of their chemistry.

DeepWater 2464 pts

nicew0  Hopefully, this will come since they are (seemingly) owners of the building itself.  Would love to see romantic scenes with these two and should be interesting OR could be big gigantic flop if not handled correctly.

nicew0 184 pts

DeepWater I agree. I think they're both really attractive and I also love that they're more "mature" than typical leads.

DeepWater 2464 pts

nicew0  Yes, nicew0, I do agree that it's nice to see Terry O'Quinn ("Kevin") and Vanessa Williams, don't remember her character name yet, in a mature "evil" relationship.   The younger leads, blonde girl and cute dude, don't, to me, quite fit in which may very well be the point I suspect.    And yes, Terry O'Quinn is sexy and love Vanessa (L.) Williams (not to be confused with the darker hued actor Vanessa Williams).  She has proven the talent she showed when she won Miss. America (1988).  I think she and "Kevin" look good together and hope this will be played up more as show moves the plot along.    Love Vegas (bald headed Michael Chiklis (sp?) is squat, built like an ox, and hot doin' the 1960s mobster era of early Las Vegas.  Never really been a fan of either Quaid brother, Dennis or Randy, but the show seems a modern day type "McCloud" mixed with "Casino" style feature film quality.

Love Scandal, The Good Wife, The Mentalist, Person of Interest (Jim Caviezel is haaawwwt (tall one).

A major paper like the New York times bemoaned a supposedly phased "new crop and pop culture" of white men/black women "weird" pairings. Hmmmm, they sure did let us know their thinking...Won't ever feel the need to patronize their paper...whether they meant it as speaking of a trend or not...

DeepWater 2464 pts

Criticalthinker   The pairing needs (and, I think, ultimately will) become normalized.  We (the viewing public) are seeiing same sex pairing becoming normalized in new sitcoms and dramas.   Black women/White men should become normalized in mainstream culture and is BEGINNING to do so, very slowly, but very surely where it (the Black woman/White man), in this dynamic, is becoming the norm.

Just streamed it. Well, it's better than Hawthorne. At least Vanessa is not a cheating hussy with some weird skeleton looking man.. I can deal with a evil demon lady.

LionMama 293 pts

Oh yes, I don't think they should be all over each other. Upper class people tend to be quite reserved I guess lol. Plus you barely saw them together tbh.. I think they are good for the role that they play :)

dani-BBW 1786 pts

LionMama "a cheating hussy with some weird skeleton looking man.." Ha!!!!

DeepWater 2464 pts

LionMama Don't have "full" cable and, unfortunately, have never seen Hawthorne, heard it was good, sort of.      I like (not love) Jada Pinkett (Smith).    Isn't Mark Anthony her love interest (I heard) in that show and what's up with alleged "open marriage" between her and Will Smith and his being "O.K." with I believe, Mark Anthony, as her screen lover and alleged real life "play patna"?  Is this for real or am I truly being misinformed here!?

LionMama 293 pts

DeepWater I enjoyed it until they turned miss pinkett into a jezebel hussy.

Mark Anthony is so ugly, I'm sorry I know there's a lot of fans out there, but nothing is hit about that man. At all. He's creepy.

Oh yeah apparantly they are one of those couples who don't love eachother and sleep with other people. It's weird I know.

SFbyDay 218 pts

Vanessa Williams seems to mostly get roles as a part of an interracial couple these days. Desperate Housewives, Ugly Betty, and now this show. Good for her that she was able to move into a mainstream career.

I haven't watched the show yet but it's on my list. I love this genre.

I saw it, and while I swore off horror and the macabre a long time ago, I have to admit this one is pulling me in (I'll just cover my eyes on the especially gory/creepy parts). The show reminds me of those slow-but-wickedly-intriguing Gothic novels: I LOVE those! I'm thinking things between Vanessa and Terry will sizzle up - they can't let the young couples have all the sizzle!

Oh, and the price tag on that red dress was $4000, not $400.

DeepWater 2464 pts

ASwirlGirl  $4000, chile that's a car to me, bwaaaaahhhhaaaaa.

ASwirlGirl 3044 pts

DeepWater I know! That line was HILARIOUS!

DeepWater 2464 pts

Guuuuurrrrrl, I saw it.   They need to speed up some of the action though, the scary parts.   Terry O'Quinn is sexy, I just love a bald man (though my honey has full head of hair in his 50s).  Vanessa Williams (what a powerhouse actor she's turned out to be) yeah was his patna in evil.   It was pretty good but they need to step up the writing game because the two leads struck me as coming out of "Smallville" (bwaaaaahhhhhaaaa).

ASwirlGirl 3044 pts

DeepWater I soooo agree about Vanessa. September 18th marked the 29th anniversary of her being named Miss America, and she has very effectively transitioned and redefined herself.

What did you think of that elevator scene??? That was so unsettling! LOL

DeepWater 2464 pts

ASwirlGirl   That was very unsettling when the dark haired woman told her boyfriend, I think, that he was lying about something.   That's when I wondered what's up with this, I'm sure it has something to do with the dead wife, possibly, of one of the tenants whom got sucked in by the wall hands after "Kevin" (Terry O'Quinn) stated he essentially didn't go along with some program to keep his life going.     The opening scenes were that of some violinist that wanted to free himself of the apartment building after having made some deal, to be great violinist for 10+ years, with "The Devil" dude got "whooshed" into the building, of course, never to be seen or heard from again.  999 (666 in shadow) Park Avenue, baby, once you've leased you be deceased, bwaaaaahhhaaaa.

The NYT writer confused me. Is the complaint that the only WM/BW parings on TV have some bizzare twist to them? That seems likely, but the writing is not exactly clear (I don't speak conspiracy theory...)

SFbyDay 218 pts

DWB I had to read it twice but it seems like the writer is saying that the WM/BW pairings are trending toward being weird. The conspiracy theory thing would come in if we believe that is deliberately done to make it seem like a WM/BW pairing is inherently weird.

I don't agree with the Scandal pairing being in the weird category. Maybe the writer doesn't watch the show. But being in love with someone that you can't have because of a public career doesn't seem weird to me. Just tragic.

There a lot more "normal" pairings of black women and nonblack men in the sci-fi genre. Firefly, Eureka, Being Human, Star Trek, Lost, Torchwood, etc. It just exists there and the fact that the couple is interracial is never part of the storyline.

I thought the same thing about the lack of chemistry, I will give it a few episodes though, the storylines are crazy entertaning.

That NYT article is a hot mess, seems like more gaslighting.

Speaking of TV does anyone else watch hawaii five-0?  Steve looks sexy as hell in the new episode previews.

DeepWater 2464 pts

thecrazyartist   Gurrrrrrrl, ALL the men on Hawaii 5.0 are fine.   Steve (face and body), Dano (a bit short but mad cute with Jersey dialect and ways), and Chin Ho (dude got that chest shelf working). Chin Ho character to me is foine.     Asian men have been getting hotter lately (last 15 years or so).

thecrazyartist 2242 pts

 DeepWater

Cosign, all the men on that show are dead sexy, there is just something about steve mmmm....I love white men with dark hair and light eyes.

DeepWater 2464 pts

thecrazyartist   Yeeeesssssss, gurl.  It's fabulous.  My boyfriend (mixed heritage White) has those "baby blues" peering at me, love it, and mixed blonde/brown hair.   Love those eyes when looking at me in intimate times.     All the men on Hawaii 5.0, like I said, are haaaaaawwwwt.   Alex O'Laughlin (Steve McGarrett) is just a straight up handsome fella with a truly nice hard and fit (in the right places) body.    Dano (Scott Caan, yeah I remember his dad James Caan as "Sonny" in original "The Godfather" who was/is (still alive and) sexy in a seriously masculine way) is hawwwwt too.   I'm loving Daniel Dae Kim (Chin Ho).   Like I said Asian men have finally begun to step up as attractive men lately (last 15 years or so) and want to do things to them, bwaaaaaaaahhhhhaaaaaaaaaa.     A lot of the new shows I think will dissipate as they do every fall season until the strongest stay put.

Love Andre Braugher  (one of the very few Black men I'm "attracted" to)  but don't think "Last Resort" will make it though, got too corny at the end the other night and could have had real implications of war between idealogues and Americans under attack by its own government and may should have taken place on cable where this show could get down to the nitty gritty of American politics but they sold out for the "happy ending for now" bit.    We shall see with all of the new stuff coming out right now.

DeepWater 2464 pts

thecrazyartist    Even the bad guy, Hung Phat or Wo Phat or somethin' like that is foine, was checkin' out his very nice butt (round and strong) gettin' away from Steve & 'em the other night after having some cats grab him up in armored car with helicopter claw giving him his escape from Steve & company, bwaaaahhhhaaaaa.
