The International Negresse Strikes Again–World Music Quest

When I was younger, I was lucky enough to come of age in a time where ethnicity did not play a big part in musical society–everywhere else, yes–but the 80s was a time of the great cross over. British super stars was kicking our asses on the rock front and we had soulful singers such as Lisa Stansfield, Teena Marie and Rick Astley invading our air waves. Introducing us the non-BP that had soul across the globe. Then there was J, the Japanese hip hop dance troupe that was all over the telly showing us that our culture was loved all over the world. And the Hawaiian family group The Jets. And we won’t even start on the mega fame of Michael Jackson.

It was because of these times, that I was able to explore world music. My first out of the box world music star was Celtic Singer Enya. I would walk around the house singing in Gaelic and my family had thought I had lost my mind. They were like “You really think you are white don’t you?” No, not really, I just had an international soul, I operated on a higher frequency that did not place me in an “ethnic” box. I was too big for that. Then Sade and Selena played a big role in my love of world music.

Since then, I have traveled the world and have discovered even more international talents that I want to share with you all. The world is so big, much bigger than the trivial ethnic and inter-ethnic battles that we have on a daily basis and honestly I truly believe it is music that brings us all together. What is it about music, even when you do not understand what they are saying that touches the soul in a way that mere words cannot? What are some of your favorite international musicians?

Ahhhh, this post spoke to my intrtnational music loving soul! I was loving just about evrything coming out of England in the 80's. I was a huge Duran Duran fan and my dad took me to see them when I was fifteen. I realized how much my dad loves me because that was so not his type of music, LOL! I got to see Lisa Stansfield in concert here in NYC at the Roxy in 1990.I heard Luis Miguel(Mexican) sing a duet with Sheena Easton in 1985 and when my family moved to San Diego, California  eight months later I found a movie sound track record( this was the last days of vinyl) that he sang on and I have been a fan of his ever since!  Some one I work with intoduced me to Lian Foley(French) and Snook(Swedish) was a suggestion from a local on a Swedish tourism site. Lord I can go on and on. I so love music. I'm writting down everything suggested here to check out and incorporate into my already huge music collection! Thank you!

I can't wait to go through these suggestions and the comments. I have pretty much always listened to world music but with the inntenetz, social media, downloadable music, Pandora, youtube and much more, the options and access has expanded. I have always loved Enya, Basia and smooth music like that in addition to more upbeat tunes.  African House Music mixes are one of my favs too. I do a ton of Indian music and get most of my leads off of smashits.com and pick from movies I have seen and plug it into Pandora. I also set up a few playlists at playlist.com with my finds in the world music genre.

Yeah she is cool, and so beautiful too. An aside, I tend to look kindly on the world music fanbase because they seem to be very open to Black female singers. Whitney & Donna (RIP), Janet, Beyonce, Tina Turner, Erykah Badu, and many other sistas are all international superstars!

grrlysquirrel75 1121 pts

AnInterestedObserver Shulamit Your comment about the world music fanbase reminded me of one of my Twitter friends that is from Norway. During the winter she mentioned that she and her husband like to sit by the fire at night and listen to Mahalia Jackson. Now most Black folks would find it odd that two White Norwegians would love them some Mahalia, but music fans around the world are much more open to music from all other countries, especially Black music. Remember the movie "The Commitments"? I never saw it, but I know those Irish people loved American soul music.

AnInterestedObserver 1029 pts

No nothing odd about it all, and that is a perfect example of what I was taling about.I feel Black female singers/musicians are more appreciated outside of the USA to be perfectly honest.

Wow I love music from around the world and not the watered down versions but the true sounds that you would hear in people's homes. Sometimes radio dumbs down ethnic music. Take salsa for instance, there are over hundreds of latin countries and they all have their own music not just salsa. I used to pick 1 or 2 countries a year and purchase tapes of those countries music not just the radio friendly but the obscure and hard to find styles as well. I had to slow down when CD's took over because of the cost. I usually buy foreign music and not too much popular music.

Thanks for this post.

So some peeps took issue with my use of Negresse. In which if they do not like the term maybe perhaps they shouldn't  like the term black? Which is what Negresse, Negro, Negrita means in other languages.. Just an observation.

Now on to something more entertaining...

Dandelion100 581 pts

 Shulamit

I dated a Mexican guy and his mom always called me negrita. I always thought of it as a derogatory term. And I know his mom didn't like me, lol.

Shulamit 1982 pts

Dandelion100 a mexican? prolly.. but my friends from panama, DR, PR and Brazil use it as a term of endearment. I guess its all about from the place it comes from because "little black girl" could be derogatory from the right lips...

FriendsofJay 1824 pts

Dandelion100 The word "Negresse" bothered me a little too.    When someone said it when I was in high school and college, it was said harshly and offensively and meant to be hurtful.  Maybe its just me.  Being older I remember the pain it caused black friends.  I don't so much compare the word to "Black" as I think of the word as a softer extension of the "N" word.  Someone pointed out that it reminded him of the word "Jewess," which I can assure you is considered offensive to Jewish girls.  Odd that we don't have a derogatory word of a white girl, only a girl whose race we don't like.  "Whitey" can be a man or a woman.  Maybe there is one and I just don't know it.

ElfeV 7085 pts

FriendsofJay  Dandelion100 "Maybe there is one and I just don't know it."

A lot of ppl use 'Becky' online but I haven't actually heard it IRL.

& btw: Elfe = ForestElfQueen... I just shortened it. lolz

AnInterestedObserver 1029 pts

 FriendsofJay

Yes, very interesting how there is no gender-specific slur for White females. should tell you something. SMH.

FriendsofJay 1824 pts

AnInterestedObserver Yes it certainly does tell me something!  But I guess the largest segment of the population in the U.S. is white and therefore it would be ill-advised for a smaller segment to have an offensive term specifically for WW.  But I'm told the demographics of the country will soon put us Anglo-Saxon in the minority in about twenty years or so.  Then we can all be minorities. I think that would be a positive for the country and race relations.  But then again, if there were only two people left on earth they'd probably find something to fight about.

Brice Cameron 2066 pts

I don't see the comments about the word.  Did they get deleted?  I almost left a comment, but I decided not to go off topic.  That word always bugged me.  I wondered if I was the only one.  I can't exactly place my finger on why it bothers me.  But I can't think of any equivalent term for other women of different races.  An Asian woman is just an Asian woman.  A European woman is a European woman.  But a female tiger is a tigress.  A female chicken is a hen, etc.  I think that might be the reason.  Using different words for females is more commonly done with animals.

ElfeV 7085 pts

Shulamit " ...use of Negresse. In which if they do not like the term maybe perhaps they shouldn't  like the term black? Which is what Negresse, Negro, Negrita means in other languages.. Just an observation."

agreed! & negress reminds me of jewess. lolz ^.^

Shulamit I did not see the posts in question so if it disappeared it were not I who took it out. Maybe the person having the issue thought better of it and deleted their post.

Looking around the net for definitions of the word I found that was and sometimes is used in an offensive manner to describe black women. It does not rise to the level of dropping the N bomb however. The key word here is sometimes.

If there was an issue with the use of that word in this space however ....I mean really. We know that the person who used it was not being offensive in fact they were using it to describe themselves.

I have to say that I was surprised to see that some find it offensive. Shulamit makes a good point at one time each other words she listed was seen as offensive. We have moved on from that which is a good thing.  Now back to our discussion.

MixedUpInVegas 1644 pts

In my French-speaking family, it was used in a somewhat derogatory way, but that is Creoles for you.  I've also heard it used in Europe to describe a very regal lady of color.  Depends on your perspective, but I don't find it to mean anything unkind in this context.

Just my take as a French speaker.

I do not unnderstand this, people are clearly saying that the word is known to be an anti-Black female slur, so what exactly is the issue with people being offended by it?

MixedUpInVegas 1644 pts

I don't believe I said anything about people being offended by it or not being so.  I simply offered my own perspective.
