Miley Cyrus Isn’t the Only Dingbat Co-Opting What She *Thinks*…

Yes, as a white girl who is a protected species, she has the ability to pick and choose what part of “black culture” she wants, a la carte. And when she’s done playing she can put that “blackness” back in her toy box right next to Barbie’s black friend, Christie. If Miley decides that next week she wants to start wearing Ralph Lauren and hang out at the yacht club, all will soon be forgiven and forgotten.

Not so with us black women, who can’t take our blackness on and off like a pair of shoes.

Go East, Young Woman: Coping With Pre-Travel Abroad Jitters…

As some of you may know, I’ve been wanting to go abroad for a couple of years now. I only started actively planning within the past few months. Though I initially hoped to be out the door by fall, it’s working out that early spring of 2014 will be my jump off point into the unknown.

A Review: The Low Carb, High Fat Cookbook…

The people who rep the author of the “Low Carb, High Fat Cookbook” must be lurking on this blog, because they sent me a review copy of this book and when it came to the door it felt like Christmas. It might not be for everyone, but eating a minimal amount of carbohydrates and no processed sugars has more than worked for me…it’s changed my life. I’m in the best physical shape ever, I have long, lean muscles, my hair is thick and lustrous and I’m sleeping without meds. Best of all, I never feel hungry or deprived…and I’m not obsessing about food. But I’ll admit starting out can be tricky as you try to adjust to what’s good and not-so-good to eat. That’s why I like the idea of this cookbook and others like it.

QOTW: “Should a Woman Ever Play Down Her Accomplishments to…

I got this question from a pretty successful friend of mine, and it took me a while to answer because I wanted to make sure I wasn’t coming from a place of “I am woman, hear me roar!!” In truth, men are very different about the issue of “touting successes,” and there’s usually a reason for that.

Weekend Read: “To Whom Much is Given” A Novel…

Summary: Success has a price and sometimes loved-ones become collateral damage. Avery Benjamin is a beautiful, 30-something, talented New York City corporate attorney of West Indian and African American heritage. A dynamic multicultural mosaic of women friends augments her life. Avery loves Antonio Dawson, a professional football player whose family is part of Atlanta’s influential African American elite. Yet, she longs for the days when she pursued big, passionate dreams. Dean Everard Swithin, a British aristocrat and Avery’s former lover from her law school days, re-enters her life making her a professional offer she cannot refuse. That is when Avery’s drama begins. Scandal and deception change her heart and her perception. Ultimately, Avery must take steps to confront her past, mend her wounds, and fulfill her destiny. “To Whom Much Is Given” is a contemporary fictional story for any person who realizes: The Best Is Yet To Come.

The Curse of Thug Culture…

I think things would be much better for Black people if thug culture would just disappear. Wouldn’t it be great if you could turn on the radio or TV or be in the presence of Black people without hearing the n-word (from other Black people)? Wouldn’t it be great to not see Black men looking like they are too stupid to dress themselves properly with their pants sagging showing their behinds? There is something wrong with popular Black culture today. It has been co-opted by a thug loving, prison loving, crime glorifying, education shunning, and lawless underclass (underclass not poor) that has no intention of fitting in with society or advancing the lives of Black people.
