“There was so much fundraising that went into Trayvon Martin’s case. They couldn’t afford a super-polished, Olivia Pope type etiquette coach to transform Ms. Jeantel into “star witness” status?”

Does Black Skin Equal Dirty?
Yes; obesity is dangerous, but so is the other extreme.
By now most of us have seen or heard of the much anticipated documentary Dark Girls that aired on the OWN Sunday evening repeating last night. I sat through it and I have to admit it was a bit painful to watch. I could have written most of that script. I was terrorized during my school years I was a dark skinned girl. I survived but the abuse was real. The abuse is real because it is still happening today as so profoundly profiled in the documentary.
Aw…but…tell me if you notice this too…
Brilliant novelist, philosopher, and fierce warrior for our daughters, Kola Boof, is set to marry in November 2013.
Oh yes, we are throwing back to the 70s dashiki without the bean pies. Ok, maybe I went a skosh bit too far but I must say, African prints are so in, there is no way they can be out. The geometric shapes and bright colors have taken the fashion world by storm and everyone is trying to get in on it. Well, at least they should.
If you were a kid growing up in the 80’s like me, when you think of Newton’s you think of figs. My parents were notorious for stocking the shelves with lame after school snacks–packaged oatmeal cookies so dry they crumble in your hands, pig skins (yes, you read that right), sweet pickles (the most disgusting food invention ever; pickles should never be sugared), sardines and saltines. So the most appealing to me were the Fig Newtons. And unlike the crumbly oatmeal cookies, the Newton’s were sort, except for those little crunchy fig seeds that added some variety of texture to my discriminating pallate. Bit of worthless trivia: I never actually saw a real fig until recently. It looked weird not sandwiched between that soft envelope cookie-thingy.
For years I have proudly waved the GOP banner and defended party politics to an extent. I am not one to make excuses for a proven racist Republican, and obviously I don’t think the party itself is racist. But, I am not a hardliner by any means and will call foul from my own party when I see it. Well, the Nation and I see it in Montgomery County, Illinois. I am outraged that Republican Party chairman Jim Allen, targeted Congressional hopeful Erika Harold who has the gall to run against Republican Rep. Rodney Davis. Allen really stepped in it this time going after Erika Harold in an ugly email with strong racial overtones.
Last week was full of WTF news that we at BB&W didn’t get a chance to discuss, but the news is just too big to be ignored. Here’s a list of what we missed…
Because inquiring minds want to know.
This one is cute…
iStock_000004447349XSmallRoutines can be both a good and a bad thing. The ability to go about your life without having to put much thought into what you are doing and where you are going allows people to escape the mundane aspects of daily life. Familiarity is comforting. Routines can be a great thing for kids, pets, and weight loss, but adhere too closely to routines can also leave you stuck in suspended animation.
Serena Williams, tennis extraordinaire and french-speaking francophile, put her foot in her mouth when she made some unfortunate comments to a reporter when questioned about her position on the Steubenville rape case.
After you see this, you’ll kick yourself for not coming!
Self tanners and bronzers make black skin look golden!
It looks like the leaders of (c)rap music have finally transitioned from light-skinned black women who look like white women to actual white women. I’m glad of that for two reasons.
Just in time for summer!
