Solange and Alan: Parting is Such Sweet Sorrow

We have some more black love news for everyone. Unfortunately, it is not pleasant. Solange and her husband of four years are getting divorced. According to Yahoo news, she has released a statement following her announcement:

“These past 2 years have brought me more physical and spiritual transition and evolution than ever before. My body left me no choice but to listen and be still. Within that stillness, I begin my journey in confronting my worst enemy, fear. I’ve lived with my best and worst moments in front of the lens and gaze of the world wince I was a teenager. I’ve always tried to live in my truth no matter how ugly or full of love it is. I’ve also tried to carve out the space to protect my heart, and my life as it unfolds, evolves, and changes.”

“Eleven years ago, I met a phenomenal man who changed every existence of my life. early this year, we separated and parted ways, (and, though it ain’t no body business,) I find it necessary to protect the sacredness of my personal truth and to live in it fully, just as I have before and will continue to do. It is unfair to not have the power of your own story as you shape and mold and rewrite it yourself, a ni- -a ain’t perfect, but I’m learning into the fear of the unknown and all the glory and power I know exist within God and the universe’s grace. May all of your transitions, no matter how big or small, be kind to you and filled with incredible love and light!” – Solange

I personally loved the look and feel of Solage’s wedding. I know of her and her work, but I will admit that I am much more familiar with her voice work on The Proud Family and Osmosis Jones. From what I have observed, it is safe to say that she is a credit to R&B and the songwriting community. She has an amazing body of work. As a celebrity, she has come across as relatively grounded and unproblematic, save an infamous elevator incident. (To be honest, that event endeared her to me even more.) She seems like a really likeable person.

We will wait to see if documents have been filed and the status of any divorce proceedings. I have seen no indication of this online, but we will continue to monitor the situation.  I am truly sad to hear that her marriage has gone the way of Hollywood, but that does not mean that we cannot take nuggets from this situation.

Things can go wrong sometimes

I will not take the time to speculate on their marriage, but things clearly did not work out, and had not been okay for some time. Whether it was one person’s fault, or the responsibility of both parties, it is important to acknowledge what went wrong, and what can be better next time.

Keep the Drama offline

I love that, so far, Solange and her soon-to-be ex husband have kept things classy. We do not see a slew of lies, slander and allegations coming out of the woodworks. While there is still time for things to shift, I appreciate that their separation and divorce has been fairly cordial for the public.

Take time to heal

Solange and Alan have eleven years of knowing each other, and were married for  four of those years. There is a lot of connections, memories and experiences that comes along with that shared history. I believe that it is important for each of them to regroup, reconcile their feelings, seek professional counselling and prepare themselves for the life that awaits them ahead.

You can begin again

I do not necessarily believe in soul mates. I believe that there is a right person out there for everyone, but if things do not work out, there is always a second chance at love. Someone else will come. You can and will be happy again. I wish all the best to Solange and Alan on their future relationships.
