Apple Brown Betty

I’m sure there are many different interpretations of this old-time recipe. And as true with any apple dessert, the addition of vanilla ice cream (cinnamon would be yummy, too), freshly whipped cream, or my personal favorite, Reddi Whip from a squirt can, is always a lovely finish.

Ingredients

10 -12 baking apples, peeled, cored and sliced

Lemon juice (for tossing apples)

2 teaspoons cinnamon

¼ to ½ teaspoon nutmeg (to taste, optional)

1 1/4 cups flour

3/4 cup brown sugar

1/4 lb. butter

Syrup

2/3 cup brown sugar

1/4 cup hot water

juice of 1/2 lemon

Directions

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees.  Toss apples in lemon juice to coat.  Arrange apples on the bottom covering all of a 12” x 9” loaf pan.  Sprinkle each layer with cinnamon to taste.  Mix the flour, brown sugar and nutmeg (optional) and cut the butter in until crumbly.  Mix the syrup, and pour ½ over the apples.  Sprinkle the flour mixture over the apples, and pour the remaining syrup over the top.  Bake at 350 for 1 hour, makes 5 servings.  Serve with ice cream of your choice.  Enjoy!

Love, love, LOVE this dessert! The "crumble" part is the best part, but the apples are great, too. I have to make sure my Dad is around when I make this just so he can eat the lion's share; it's one of those few desserts that I have to make myself stop eating.

Yum, this is one of my favorite desserts, particularly with homemade vanilla ice cream.

Hey Karla!  This particular recipe is best served almost piping hot right from the oven.  Give it about 15 minutes or so cool down time, and then get ready for that all but unforgetable trip down memory lane!  Grand Ma's house, all the smells of the upcoming holidays, family gatherings and the bestest food in the whole wide world!  Stay hungry, and enjoy.
