Twist Outs are the Fine-Haired Girl’s Best Friend–Tutorital and Care

IMG_8338

Gonna toot my horn here: I’ll be 40 in July, and combined with my diet and exercise, I got to give props to Innovative Skincare–best skin care line I’ve tried…EVER, because this photo is untouched and raw, and I don’t have a lick of make up on.

Some of you have noticed my new twist-out look from my last Question of the Week video. I’m so happy I have FINALLY found a way to wear my favorite natural style without all of the fairy knots and breakage. In fact I’m embarrassed about how simple and much easier it was than what I was doing before.

BEFORE: When I wore twist-outs, I’d make about 30-40 little twists, using a lot of manipulation parting, smoothing the strands with a fine-toothed comb, lots of product. Because my hair is fine, just the slight tension I use to twist would cause my strands to straighten at the ends–not a good look, because it resembles heat damage, which I don’t have.

NOW: I only twist in eight sections–two in the front, one on each temple, two right below the crown, and two at the base of my head. Then I curl the ends with soft rollers and put on my night-time bonnet. In the morning I separate each twist CAREFULLY fluffing from the roots, NOT the ends. Fluff from the ends and you’ll have a frizz ball.

The rollers I use…you can get them at Walgreens and Sally Beauty Supply

I use two bobby pins for each side (four total) to achieve the tapered shape.

If you have fine hair, you really don’t need any more than 8-12 twists, and less twists mean less tangling. Fatter twists means more volume at the roots too…

I also attribute my tangle-free twist outs to the ultra-conditioning products I’m using. Right now I’m all about Alterna’s Caviar Line (truly, truly amazingly worth the $$) and the Jose Eber Moisturizing tool. As a result, my hair looks healthier, stronger, and breaks less.

Bringing your hair back…

I got a question from a new member who recently had a hair disaster imposed upon her by her stylist. She wanted to know how, and almost forty, I’m keeping my hair healthy and relatively full. Here’s what I’m doing that’s working for me:

Vitamins: I’m taking Biosil and Phyto

Nutrition: Lots and Lots of green, leafy vegetables, protein powder, spirulina and MSM powder, and pesticide-free raspberries, blueberries and black berries mixed up in a shake.

Deep conditioning with a heat cap once a week, adding 100% argan oil to my conditioner

Upkeep

I’m re-twisting every night and spraying with water to soften the hair and then rolling with the soft rollers. It takes five minutes max.
