Play with the kids.
Kids are a lot less judgmental. They’re not going to think your stupid (well, most) for not speaking the family’s native tongue. I’ve endeared myself to families across Kathmandu with my ability to keep kids engaged for long periods of time. Also, kids would rather you not talk anyway. Sit on the floor, grab some Lego, and build a cultural bridge.
