Like thousands of others, I became captivated and enchanted by the Nulls, the cutest swirly couple on YouTube. Hailing from Kansas City, what I love about their love is that it seems so effortless. What they do in their videos is to portray interracial relationships sans the qualifier–in their own way, they help to normalize these relationships. A single person looking at the Nulls can at once see see themselves in such a relationship and aspire for it.

BBW: How did you guys meet?
Austin: We met at our church. I had been there all my life and she had just recently started going to the church. As I’ve mentioned numerous times in our videos, the first time that vividly sticks out to me about her existing was when I was on stage playing guitar and she walked past in some tight black pants and I was like, “Whoa!” Lol. Pretty inappropriate, considering I was in church, but she’s a hottie and caught my attention!
BBW: You’re (obviously) an interracial couple. Were there any concerns from either of you, or from friends and family about your union?
Austin: Not really at all. We had one set of grandparents who weren’t that excited about it because of that but our actual close family and friends were overwhelming supportive of us.
BBW: What’s the ‘swirling’ climate in your neck of the woods? Are people pretty open? Would you recommend other interracial couples to consider living there?
Austin: We currently live in Kansas City and haven’t had any noticeable problems with being in an interracial relationship. In the suburbs, we don’t have that problem and the more we head into the city we definitely don’t have that problem and will, many times, see other interracial couples.
BBW: Congrats to your beautiful baby girl! As the parents of a biracial child, give any thought about how you’ll help her understand her place in the world?
Austin: Um…not too much. Lol. We obviously want her to know about her heritage and history, on both sides, but we mainly just want to instill good character and values in her life.
BBW: Everyone LOVES your videos! What inspires you?
Austin: Our viewers inspire us, pure and simple. We obviously love to make videos and be entertaining but it’s the comments and feedback from our viewers about how something we said or did made a positive impact on their life that inspires us to keep making videos. Our goal is to make people smile and feel happiness.
