Gabriel Aubry has a good day in court. A family court judge in Los Angeles ordered Halle Berry to pay Gabriel Aubry, her ex-boo and father of her only child Nahla Aubry, $20,000 a month in child support.

And you know what I say? Good for Gabriel and good for Nahla. This seems to be a fair ruling. If the shoe were on the other foot and Gabriel was the one making big bucks then he would be the one who had to pay Halle. At the end of the day it’s all about making sure the the child is able to maintain a similar lifestyle whether residing with the custodial parent or visiting with the non-custodial parent. A child should not go from living a life of luxury and carefree play while staying at the home of one parent and then have to have to visit the other parent and sleep in cramped apartment while eating cheap Chinese food every night for dinner. A situation like that will make the child not want to visit the poorer parent and will create tension between the parents.

$20,000 may sound like a lot–but it’s really not that much money for people like Halle Berry and Gabriel Aubry. Berry has asked the court if she can move her daughter to France. Aubry resides primarily in Los Angeles but has family in Canada. If Aubry wants to visit Nahla in France he will be forced to pay thousands of dollars every month just for plan tickets to see his little girl–and Halle should be required to help defray some of the costs of those plan tickets since she’s the one who wants to move.

What’s good for the goose is good for the gander, and as more women make the big bucks and choose to have children with middling-income men, situations like Berry’s and Aubry’s are going to become more common. Don’t hate Aubry, hate the game.
