Open Thread: What Do You Think About the Rachel Dolezal NAACP Scandal?

Rachel Dolezal, president of the NAACP chapter in Spokane, Washington, was force to resign not because she is white, but because she is white and impersonated a black woman, according th NAACP president and CEO, Cornell William Brooks. The whole thing is just so bizarre–she graduated from Howard University with a full scholarship and then turned around and sued the school for discrimination because she felt the school wouldn’t hire her because she was white.

As a white woman who looks pretty regular, she probably would have muddled through life as a stay-at-home mom of two kids. As a light skinned “black woman” with the coveted loose spiraled curls and light eyes that color struck blacks think is the utter epitome of “black beauty,” she’s an absolute rock star. She’s put on a pedestal, black folks hang on her every word, plus light-skinned blacks hold top-of-the-food-chain status with the NAACP. Everyone knows that. This is probably one of the most clear-cut proof of light-skinned privilege I’ve ever seen. Rachel basically chose her privilege a la carte, and simply switched one for another. She picked the one that would get her the most respect, attention, and success.

Could you imagine the discovery of a man who likes to wear heels, lipstick and women’s underwear being elected to the local chapter of the National Organization of Women (NOW)? Whoa…

What’s your thoughts on all this?
