Thoughtful Satire: “Dear White People”

Now this I’d pay to see.

Now this is a flick I’d pay to see.

DEAR WHITE PEOPLE follows the stories of four black students at an Ivy League college where a riot breaks out over a popular “African American” themed party thrown by white students. With tongue planted firmly in cheek, the film will explore racial identity in “post-racial” America while weaving a universal story of forging one’s unique path in the world.

I went to a pretty elite and lily-white college myself, so I can relate. I have a hunch a lot of ladies here can too.

These kids are trying to raise enough dough to get it in theaters, so give already!

Lisa22 I hardly ever read comments on Youtube. So many idiots with nothing of importance to say.

LOL! To his credit, he shared his revelation that it was like any other restaurant in NYC  even though it was run by BLACKS.

Looks smart and it's not "stereotypes wrapped in Christian dogma"! I like it already.  PS; I don't watch Fox but the character's comments about there already being a "Dear Black People" in mainstream media reminded me of Bill O'reilly's pleasant surprise after going to Sylvia's in Harlem for dinner. LOL! To his credit, he shared his revelation that it was like any other restaurant in NYC  even though it was run by BLACKS. And I quote:

"There wasn't one person in Sylvia's who was screaming, 'M-Fer, I want more iced tea. "

This looks promising. I hope they can get it into theaters.

I'm very curious but a little skeptical as to why the darkest girl is all the way in the back.

Must. We. Do. This?

Seriously.

Just enjoy the moment and the kid's accomplishment and not attempt to hijack the thread.

Brenda55 Really good.  How creative.  I like it.

Brenda55  Yeah I think we should. Don't get me wrong I'm proud at what they're doing here but at the same time I see the same thing happening time and time again and within our own community. Why not bring it up? That the problem everybody says why are we bringing this up stop nit picking but the fact of the matter is that this IS an issue. One that this blog has posted about a few times.

Asia  Brenda55 A proactive solution would be to contact that persons making this movie and ask them about the shade diversity of their cast.

One thing that might be touched on (we don't know yet, as this is just a "trailer" for a movie that hasn't even been made) is colorism among black students at college.

I'd rather not make assumptions about movies that have not been made. I actually noticed though that for the most part (aside from the one darker girl that as mentioned), most of the students are lighter. Even the "dark-skinned" girl you noticed at the back. This could actually be the situation at many elite colleges where for generations, persons who have been going to these elite schools have been well to do black (and from families who practiced the "paper bag test in a manner of speaking). This could be something that comes up. Again, the movie has not been made, so who knows where they are going. It DOES look like intra-racial tensions will be touched on, so I would't necessarily sell these persons short by assuming from a proposed movie clip that it's going to be ignored.

I don't know why the cast isn't largely dark-skinned. This could be because the project was made by a group of friends/associates, most of whom happen to not be dark-skinned, and for the purpose of this trailer, didn't see the need to go out and hire darker actors because they didn't expect it to come up in discussion among those watching the trailer.

I understand your concern, and that's why I think rather than hijack this discussion post, you could contact the movie makers directly and express your concern.

 Asia  Brenda55 wouldn't*

Asia  Brenda55 In the past, we've talked about shadism, but there's a difference between making unfounded accusations, and having a dialogue.

Instead of saying, "Oh they put the darkest black girl (she's not) at the back!"

You could watch the trailer and decide for yourself whether or not this is a project you feel should be promoted. And if not, simply say, "I'm not interested in giving time and energy to a movie called "Dear White People" that for all its postering completely ignores us dark-skinned sisters, letting the ultra-black consciousness of the black community fall on people who are noticeably lighter than the average black person."

That is certainly your right and your right to that opinion.

AWESOME premise!  My 20yo son thinks it's great as well, says he can relate too.

Would love to see this, will be some VERY uncomfortable people in the theatres.

This movie looks powerful. Plus, Oprah and Spike Lee would make a beautiful and socially aware black baby girl ;)
