Natural Hair and Stretching…To Do it, Or Not?

Sorry to bring the stretching versus no stretching debate from the hair boards here, but I’m curious to know what you ladies think. Yesterday I mentioned on our fan page that I’ve had zero-sum hair growth over the last year, meaning my hair has grown, but it’s also broken, had to be cut, and had suffered damage from knots and tangles, especially in the areas of my scalp where the hair is fine but tightly coiled. I was over on the Black Girl Long Hair blog, drooling over the ladies with gigantic afros, and one in particular who looked like she had my hair type (4a) said that she has more success stretching her hair to prevent tangles and knots. I tried my own version of it today, and blow-dried my hair with low heat.

My first observation is that yes, indeed Virginia, my hair is easier to manage with gentle stretching and light tension. I also notice that my hair doesn’t do the whole “crisp dry” thing where I feel like I need to spray down my hair and moisturizing at high noon, dusk, and midnight lest my strands turn to gremlins.

I’m also wearing my hair mostly in buns and now a French braid, because I can actually finger part my hair in this blow dried state.

What say ya’ll?
