No Wedding, No Womb!

BB&W Survey Results: 69% of IRR Black Mothers Married Before Conceiving; 19% Wed Later

Yesterday on a whim, I decided to host an informal survey of the participants of this blog and our Facebook page–black women interested and involved in interracial relationships. In the course of 24 hours, 84 people responded. This is by far not a survey to stand up to peer review, but it gives a snapshot of the new generation of black women who have empowered themselves to find partners outside the color lines. We do it for a variety of reasons. For some, it’s a preference. For others, it’s to increase the odds of finding a partner who shares your values. One such value, conceiving children in an intact home, seems to be the prevailing value system for the women of Beyond Black & White.

While informal, the results here seem to indicate a contrast in what seems to be the traditional norm in the black community. In fact, our marriage stats are nearly the EXACT CONVERSE of the persistent 72% out-of-wedlock rate in the black community. Add that to responders who indicated that they married after conception, and you have a near 90% marriage rate.

Now, no one is suggesting that marriage is always the answer, especially if your partner is a complete screwup. But study after study (the legit ones, not just the dimestore surveys) PROVE that children are better off being raised in two-parent households. Combine this informal data with the LEGIT study that the longest lasting interracial marriage pairings are between black women and white men, then I think those blowhards who claim every bad thing in the black community is our fault by way of our very existence need to stop throwing stones in glass houses.

Tell us again, how black women are horrible, and we all here are a bunch of bitter and lonely bed wenches  I’ll wait.

*Note: This is not about competing against black men, which some might draw such a conclusion, because the idea of this survey was inspired by some pretty bad news about black fathers of biracial children. It’s not. This is about setting the record straight, and for at least ONE major blog standing up to defend OUR honor. When you are constantly being told all over the internet that you are “the bottom of the barrel” and “no one wants you,” at some point, that bitch you’re kicking is going to draw her fangs and bite your ass.
