Makeup Basics– Women of Color “Yellow Bone” **Cool Undertones**

I use the term ‘yellow bone’ lightly because in black American folklore, yellow bone is used to refer to light skinned–multiracial–black women, however this is a fallacy. “Yellow bones” can also be medium tone and dark skinned, like myself. Women of color like caucasian women have olive or red undertones. Today, I am focusing on those with olive–read yellow–undertones.

Yellow bones come in all shades. From light (multiethnic or 2 multiethnic parents) to dark (ethnic blending in recent past or one multiethnic parent). Don’t be confused just because you are multiracial does not mean you will have have yellow undertones. It depends on the mix. Native American, East Indian, or Pacific Islander (esp. Filipino) with black will most likely  give you red undertones but any multiethnic mixing with European or East Asian blood will most always give you yellow undertones.

In order to understand the varying shades in the yellow undertones spectrum here is a chart of Mac Foundation shades in the NC (neutral cool) family. I will be using mostly Mac foundations because it is the product line that I know best. If you have other products that you like take what I am teaching here and apply it to that line.

The best way to know if you have yellow undertones is to look at the underside of your arm if the skin there is yellow or gold then you indeed have olive undertones. You can also look at your chest–basically areas that do not get much sunlight. Another way to tell is to put a foundation on your face that has a warm/red undertone, if after a few minutes to an hour of wearing it your skin starts to turn or look orange–for years I wore NW45 or 43 or Fashion Fair and could not figure out why I was always looking orange because I had the misguided attitude that since I was ‘dark skinned’ I was obviously a ‘red bone’–than you obviously have yellow undertones. And if you are wondering I, like Gabrielle, am a NC50.

The one important thing you must know when choosing your makeup is that you must ALWAYS stick to warm colors. Colors that are more red or orange versus blue or yellow. The reason for this is because we are on the darker end of the gold spectrum using colors that have cool undertones can turn gray on our skin and make us look green–on the lighter end– or gray on the darker end. I also like to use fuchsia and purple a lot since purple and yellow are opposites on the color spectrum, therefore those color families give us a healthy glow.

Well how can you tell if a color is more cool than warm you ask? Look at these two Mac eye shadow colors. One is Star Violet (cool tone) and the other is Plum Dressing (warm). You would use Plum Dressing if you had to choose.

Star Violet (cool tones)

Plum Dressing (warm tones)

I have put together a few makeup inspiration boards for you to look over to see how I choose colors. I hope they inspire you. And do not be afraid to try color. Gold or bronze lipstick or gloss is not considered ‘natural.’ Who has ever seen any human with bronze or gold lips ever? So, my Mac users who are addicted to Oh Baby, In my tranny voice, “Ima need you to try something new.”

I mixed these charts to incorporate looks for women on both ends of the shade spectrum. Again, the charts are just base line suggestions not the law and it really does not matter your shade–its more about application technique– you can use both charts in both spectrums to your advantage. Enjoy.

Yellow and Olive undertones are not the same thing

I wear NC44-45 and have more olive undertones...You said ALWAYS stick to Warm colors, is that advice for NC50s or all the NCs you listed??? I was under the impression that because I am a cool I needed to stick with cool colors.

Brown Girl 5 pts

this is the biggest piece of tom foolery. yellow bone isn't based on undertone, but skin color. the term is used to describe very fair african american women regardless of color.

I am very proudly brown skin, with yellow undertones and no i am not a yellow bone, nor would i EVER be considered one. this seems like a brown skin woman's attempt to feel better about her skin tone. I am brown. I am proud to be brown. I am not a yellow bone. Gabrielle Union and Kerry Washington are not yellow bones. They are dark skin black women wearing bronzer with good lighting.

The makeup suggestions are interesting, but the foundation/intro to your article is quite misleading.

Brown Girl Not sure where you are coming from with that Anthem, did you actually read the first paragraph??? You must have missed the word "Folklore" & "Fallacy"

Try again:

I find that the most foolproof way to determine your undertone is to look at your veins on the underside of your wrist. Green = yellow undertone. Bluish/purple = red undertone. I wouldn't consider Kerry Washington a yellow undertone. She looks more red to me. And the woman next to Beyonce could go either way.

Also, I've been looking into Mac's NC scale and I think I'll test out NC44 and 45. What's weird is, I looked up NC45 makeup tutorials on Youtube and the women giving the tutorials all had WIDELY different skin tones, from Halle Berry to even darker than Gabrielle Union. I don't really understand how that's possible, unless the lighting in the videos makes folks appear darker/lighter than their true skin tone.

Soul_Incites Kerry is definitely yellow.and so is Chanel Iman. Kerry would be NC45 and so would Chanel. But she could even be NC44. She's kind of light. Also a lot of these people use bronzers that make them look a bit red but they are indeed yellow..

Shulamit  Soul_Incites T....am I yellow or red? Oh! and I want you to "dress" me for the book signing May 15. We need to talk, chica! I'm LOVING these posts...so dang good. I'm so smart, because I know how to get folks on my team who are SMARTER than me. ;-)

Shulamit 1982 pts

Christelyn   Soul_Incites Let me take a look at your pics Chris. And I can do that. When do you want to talk?

Christelyn 8739 pts moderator

Shulamit  Soul_Incites Soon. Very soon. I really need some style injected into me. I'm a yoga pants kinda gal.

Christelyn   Soul_Incites oh lawd!! ima need to make a trip to California on my way out of the country.. lol. as far as your undertones, you could either be NW45 or NC50. When you go to the MAC counter have them try both...

Christelyn 8739 pts moderator

Shulamit  Soul_Incites is that yellow bone or red bone??! lol

Shulamit 1982 pts

Christelyn   Soul_Incites hahaha.. NC50 is yellow bone, NW45 is red bone :-)

Soul_Incites Ugh, what if my veins are bluish-green, does that mean I'm both? Lol, just kidding...but I'm really bad at telling these undertone thingies too because Kerry looks reddish to me also.  Then again, when I looked at the red undertone tutorial, she doesn't look as "red" as those women.  Anyway, this is probably why my makeup is so hit or miss.  Wow...

Pearl So serious though! I had this thought just today while I was out. And this is going to sound so horrible, but the city (at least) is just filled with ugly white people! I'm in the middle of a crowded train like, this is the standard of beauty? Really? I mean, when I see a pretty white girl walking down the street, I will give props where props are due. I remember a few weeks ago I passed by a very striking blonde girl. But on average, when I got out, the most attractive people I see are usually black women. And of course, the occasional white guy when they decide to burrow out of wherever they're hiding. I don't know if my eyes are just biased to these things, but I'm just saying...

Oh the undertones. I think I am a combination of red and yellow. I wear n43 i used to wear n45 with mac...*sigh* i've visited a mac counter on two separate occasions. I was told I have a red undertone on the next visit I was told yellow...hence the switch from one to the other...I give up! :(

Shulamit 1982 pts

Ms. Kay nc43, nc45? or nw43, nw45? they are in the same color family. you just get darker. your tones don't change and honestly some people at the Mac counter haven't a clue. these days they are no hiring quality makeup artists like they used to. sigh. send a pic, i can tell u :-)

MySmile 4172 pts

Thanks for this! You, me, and Gabrielle Union all wear the same color in mac lol. I may try that colorful smoky eye. Purple is my favorite color. I tried red lipstick but it looked weird on me :-/

Shulamit 1982 pts

MySmile you have to pick the right red. i am going to do a post on that later in the week. so be on the look out :-)

"The best way to know if you have yellow undertones is to look at the underside of your arm if the skin there is yellow or gold then you indeed have olive undertones."

I've always read this for determining foundation color.  However, the underside of my arm seems a whole shade lighter than my face!   I guess I'm having trouble determining exactly where I fit in when it comes to undertones!

Love these post btw!  I had very little makeup guidance as a young lady.  My Momma discouraged me from wearing makeup.  And only one of my older sisters wore makeup.  We're both the same shade and my older sister was definitely of the mindset that as a dark-skinned woman, there were certain acceptable and safe colors you should wear.  I kind of adopted that attitude too.  But, I'm trying to break out and try new things.  I would love to find a red (not burgundy) lipstick that would work for me!

MySmile 4172 pts

The Working Home Keeper Yes, used to have difficulty determining what my undertones were too...but I figured it out.  The inside of my arms are like a shade or two lighter than the rest of my body too! I was wearing make-up for red undertones and I started looking pink! lol. I think in the last post she mentioned that dark skinned women can be a mixture of both red undertones and yellow so it's hard to tell. I guess the best way to know is to go to a make up counter and get them to tell you..and put on shades so you can see how it looks on you..but I think they'll expect you to buy something lol.  The red lipstick thing has been a fail for me so far too lol :-/

Also, do you know why do a lot of moms don't like their daughters wearing make up? Is it because they think they are trying to be too grown? lol My mom was all about beauty. I got my eyebrows done at 12 (really needed it!) and wore eyeshadow at 13 (mom does make up for a living). Sometimes I wish my mom was less focused on outer appearance but I'm glad she wasn't that strict about make up.

The Working Home Keeper 6591 pts

MySmile Thanks for the tips!  My Momma is of an older generation, so some of her issue with makeup could have been her age and old-fashioned ways!  When I was younger and someone would always remark that I looked pretty, she (my Momma) would always chime in with her "pretty is as pretty does".  Which pretty much took away any good feeling I got from the compliment!  I'm just not sure with my Momma.  Maybe she never felt pretty herself?  She's not really a girly-girly type.  I'm the complete opposite.  I was finally able to convince my Momma to allow me to wear makeup when I was 16yo after finding an older picture of her - wearing makeup!

When my own daughter becomes older, I want to teach her how to wear makeup in a way that doesn't make her look too grown, but enhances her beautiful features.  Tasteful but not over done!

@MySmile @The Working Home Keeper My Smile, that says it all about you. TWHK, You don't need any help, just stay the way you are. huba, huba! LOL

Shulamit 1982 pts

The Working Home Keeper its not to match your color but to determine your undertones. To match your color, use the driver side (the side the sun hits when driving) jaw line :-)

dasdbobb 1380 pts

On the other hand, 99% of you need no make up at all. Please let your natural beauty shine thru.

The Working Home Keeper 6591 pts

dasdbobb Makeup done well enhances natural beauty IMO :)

The Working Home Keeper I recently did a shoot with a pro makeup artist and OH. MY. GOD. Where did those cheekbones come from? You mean I've had them chiseled onto my face all this time? I now SING the praises of makeup. Enhancing natural beauty indeed!

Shulamit 1982 pts

dasdbobb makeup is meant for fun, like ur wardrobe, another extension of your personality if you will. yes most women don't NEED makeup we just LIKE to wear it..

MySmile 4172 pts

Shulamit dasdbobb Exactly. Make up is fun..it's like an art form. For some people it can become extreme though (ex: if you have never gone out to the gas station or to the gym without make up on). I've been wearing less make up lately...I only wear full make up (foundation, etc) for special occasions or dates now. Like TWHK said, It can really enhance what's already there! What I try to do is "play up" one feature that I like on my face...for me it is my eyes..so I will wear eyeliner and eyeshadow and just swipe on clear or tinted lipgloss.

dasdbobb 1380 pts

@Shulamit Oh I agree, it's just whay you have to go through to get it on and just right, then take it off before bed, then put it back on the next day over and over and over again. And we men sometimes why you take so long to get ready to go out. LOL All kidding aside, yes I do agree if done properly it is an enhancement to your already beautiful features and faces. 'nuff said before I get into trouble.

dasdbobb 1380 pts

in the fiirst line the word is WHAT, not whay. dam typos. LOL
