Authors of Fictional Books that feature Women of Color Leads

Written by Saran Lawson

Reading fiction is one of the greatest things that a bookworm can do. It allows you to escape into far away places even if you’re in your own backyard. There are almost an unlimited amount of books available at any bookstore. When you are a woman of color and you enjoy reading fiction, there is sometimes a limit in the books you see yourself in. I guarantee you if you are a millennial then one of your first books was the Coldest Winter Ever by Sistah Souljah. The problem is when you are a black woman who doesn’t fit the mold, the books that you enjoy don’t have you in it.  I am a generous person who cares about your reading needs. So, here is my playlist of women of color authors with books you’ll want to read again:

Fantasy – Mariah Carey

Tomi Adeyemi:

You may know her for her number one best selling New York Times book, Children of Blood and Bone. It is published by, Holt Books for Young Readers/Macmillian. The movie is in development at Fox 2000/ Temple Hill Productions. The book is based in West Africa and has all the magic, friendship and romance you can ask for in a Fantasy Novel. I just got done reading this novel and I would recommend it to anyone who will listen. The sequel, Children of Virtue and Vengence is available for pre-order in stores.  Trust me, if you haven’t had the pleasure of reading it you’re missing out.

Rachel Jonas:

Is a YA Paranormal/ YA urban fantasy writer out of Michigan. Do you have a funny feeling that you’ve been here before? This story with roots in East Africa is a cool twist on reincarnation and shifters. Get the full series of The Genesis of Evangeline, available on Amazon. Lose track of time reading this series when you are looking to binge read.

Romance – Willow Smith

Victoria Smith:

She is a self-published new adult contemporary author. I’m not ashamed to say I have read just about everything that hasn’t been nailed down by Victoria. If you are into Interracial Romance or Romance in General, then trust me you want to check her out. She has too many great series to count. My favorites are the Found By You series and The Space Between Series.

Raven St. Pierre:

Is a self-published Interracial/Multi-Cultural/African American Romance writer. The Free Falling series was everything for me and then some. Want to travel to the world of exotic dancing in the comfort of your own home? There is the Men of Indecent Exposure series. Although it focuses on Male strippers it has a lot of heart. She has a book to suit you no matter what you are looking for. You won’t be disappointed.

These authors are available on Amazon, as well as Amazon Kindle. If you have Amazon Kindle Unlimited some of these books will be free or as low as .99 cents. If you have read books by any of these authors, leave a comment. I would love to hear about your reading experiences. Try not to give any spoilers. I would hate to ruin the fun for other interested readers. Love you, Besos!
